Melissa J Evans

Melissa J Evans has been playing around the traps for the past 15 years and has, not surprisingly, had a number of fantastic opportunities in that time. However it’s the smallest things that Evans still finds the most rewarding.

“The biggest buzz I get is when people in the audience that I have never seen before are singing along to my originals word for word,” she says.

“Playing in Seattle at the North by Northwest Festival was a definite highlight - playing to so many people was awesome. I did an independent tour of the US in the late 90s; it was a tremendous experience - very grounding. I saw so many unique musicians, people who would blow you away busking on the streets - just amazing.

“It is fantastic to sit and chat with fellow musos. The most distinct highlight was my first major gig, which was at the Sitting Duck in West End years ago. It was so exciting to know that I was fulfilling a dream!”

Aside from this, Evans has supported acts such as Vika and Linda Bull, Maree Wilson and Monique Brumby, and it’s other artists such as these that influence the way Evans writes and plays.

“I watch other musicians, and watch how music and sound evolve and try and make things different so people will listen from the very first note,” she says. “Lyrically I am just inspired by everything around me. I sort of meld people with nature and love songwriters who use clever language to get their point across.”

A Melissa J Evans live show is said to be an intense and uplifting experience.

“A lot of people say that they feel like I am singing about them personally and get really emotional with my songs, but there is a humorous side as well, so it’s not all tears and tissues!” she assures.

Melissa J Evans plays the Troubadour Wednesday Sep 20, and The Powerhouse Spark Bar Thursday Sep 28.
