The best kept secret in music

"Bit different now-southern soul with a modern twist from Melissa Young's single "Mad At Myself" on SugaShack Music. This lady's voice is sweetly melodic and the song has a very catchy chorus."-BILL BUCKLEY, SOUL CAFE - THE INDIE PLATTER

"Northern Soul- July, UK"

"A nice 4 track single CD in the shops now and one that'll be popular in the modern Soul rooms around the country. It's taken from her forthcoming album which, if this is anything to go by, will be more than welcome. Melissa has a superb soulful voice that is just right for today's modern scene, and this track, with its catchy melody and the quality of its arrangements will, I'm sure, make a big impression on the Brit record buying public. I hadn't heard much of Melissa Young before hearing this single, but I will be keeping a close look out for future music from her from now on! excellent"- PADDY GRADY, Northern Soul - Blues and Soul Magazine

Feeling a bit camera shy

With her first single "Mad At Myself" burning up the airwaves in Europe and the US, Melissa Young's debut CD, Just Up The Road, on SugaShack Music, doesn't hit stores until 2007, and she already has a growing core of diehard fans. The singer/songwriter brings an explosively fresh approach and rich sound to her music; it’s hard not to be drawn into the soulful-poetic life experiences that she so vividly sings about. Young’s style combines Soul, hip-hop, and a little rock, delivering an edgy raw sound that is reminiscent of the likes of legends such as Betty Wright, Tina Turner, and, at times, she reminds you of Martha Reeves without the Vandellas. Young lives for the live music, it is the backbone of her music.

Young, who spent her early years in Greenville, South Carolina, singing in the church choir, started her own singing group at the age of 15. In 1999, resolved to expand on her love of music, Young lent background vocals to several artists, including reggae singer Ky-mani Marley, son of the legendary Bob Marley. Over the past 4 years, Young has honed her skills as a writer and performer, in preparation for her solo debut. These days Young can be found burning up the stages of her new home Atlanta and other cities across the country. Her album, Just Up The Road, is set to be released in early, 2007 as one of SugaShack Music’s debut projects. Just Up The Road is symbolic of the journey Young has traveled thus far in her life, at times, she says, “I feel like I am on this long country road, pit stopping in small towns along the way. Each time that I get back on the road, I’ve learned something new to carry with me. Sometimes I’m a little lost, but I never stop looking for my destination, I know however hard or challenging, what I am looking for is just up the road, so I keep going. Just when I feel I’ve gone too far or missed a turn, I look up and what I am looking for is right there, waiting in front of me.” Melissa Young has arrived and is ready to claim her place in musical history.
