Bio
Whether she is telling a story, firing off rhythmic hip-hop inspired spoken word, weaving through mesmerizing ballads, or hard-hitting honest rock n'roll, Mel Larkin is a triple threat- brilliant lyrics, an unforgettable voice, and an unparalleled stage energy
Always a writer, she learned guitar late in life -- on her twentieth birthday -- and immediately began putting poetry and stories and song. Shortly after, Melissa began singing back-up in a reggae band. In her spare time she began writing her own music in which she focused on observations about daily life, alongside realities she studied during the completion of honours degree in what she refers to as ‘evil’. Writing at an astounding rate, Mel has a collection of hundreds of songs - most still unreleased.
In 2006, After flying home from the Sahara desert, Melissa met numerous people who would change her life backstage at Toronto's Molson Ampitheatre. Seeing immense potential in this young songstress, Canadian band and independent record label owners Nine Mile took Melissa under their wing, and began recording her massive repertoire of songs. Shortly after, Melissa was invited to join a North American tour opening for both Nine Mile and the Australian phenom, Xavier Rudd -- an amazing opportunity for a girl who had only ever played one show.
Since signing with Dreadrock records, Melissa has continued to play her heart out across North America, playing venues from The Knitting Factory in New York,, to the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, to he Elmocambo in Toronto, to a farm in Prince Edward County, where she is currently living.
The next 6 months will be exciting for Mel - she will be releasing 3 ep's - one, the Found Traveler ep of old material, second, Common Crow an ep of new, rock material and the third entitled Dark Lark a hip-hop/spoken word collaborative project. Viist www.mellarkin.com for more!
