"Singer Melody Angel of MTV’s Starmaker Is “Born To Do This”"

I remember when I first watched one of my favorite singers on MTV a few years back. I never imagined that I would actually have an opportunity to speak with such a notable performer and kindhearted individual. Melody Angel is one multi-talented and gifted artist who possesses not only class and grace, but also humility. In fact, her personality alone would instantly attract anyone who comes into contact with her.

August 2009 was the first time I saw Melody Angel adorn my television screen on MTV’s P Diddy’s Starmaker show. I loved her voice and sound from the first moment I heard her sing on that stage in front of Mr. P. Diddy himself. I immediately became a fan and quickly subscribed to her Youtube Channel.

This chick sings with such passion and soul! Her music seriously keeps my finger on the replay button. She also has some sick self-taught acoustic guitar skills that I wish I could master in like a day! (Unrealistic of me to learn that quickly, but hey…a girl can dream right?!)

Her journey as a musician started in Chicago, where she learned how to play guitar at the young age of fifteen. Blues, hip-hop, Motown and alternative rock music molded this singer’s love for music–especially the extraordinary rock music of Price, Jimmy Hendrix and Jeff Buckley. Melody Angel was known as quite the performer among the popular Chicago nightclubs like The Elbo Room, Abbey’s Pub and The Double Door. These local city stages were only the beginning for Melody. With her constant grind, faith, and dedication, she would soon make her debut on one the largest television networks in the world.

Currently, Melody Angel is working on her new album and songwriting for various artists. I must say, Laurieann Gibson spoke words of truth when she said, “Melody you were born to do this”. Make sure you guys check out this talented and beautiful singer!

"Melody Angel Meets Michael Jackson"

After listening to this vocally gifted artist, it is clear that Melody Angel has the perfect name to describe her sound and her soul.
I stumbled upon her video when I was looking for a really good Michael Jackson cover on youtube, and ended up listening to her videos for an hour. This cover of “Dirty Diana,” was EVERYTHING I needed that day, feeding a fix I needed to take care of when goin through my periodical “I miss MJ” momentsLittle did I know, she has had a moment in the spotlight on Diddy’s MTV show, Star-maker. A fan favorite, despite the fact that she did not win, Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy Fame hinted that if Diddy missed the bus, He would be the 1st one ready to snatch Melody up for his Team!

Keep your eye on this one, we’re working on more details of what she has brewing in 2011…STAY TUNED! - The Rhythm Junkie

"Melody Angel"

Not many 7-year-olds were fascinated with Prince's Purple Rain movie when it came out, but Chicago native Melody Angel was clearly an exception. With a little help from her mother (and a lot of patience!), she learned to play acoustic guitar by watching music videos around the clock - MTV

"Melody Angel "The Death Of Me""

Singer/songwriter Melody Angel is a Chicago native, who was featured on P. Diddy's Starmaker series, making it all the way to the series finale. Here she earns her first Gowhere feature with a touching song called "The Death Of Me", inspired by the fight against HIV/AIDS amongst young women. One can't help but appreciate the message and feel the soul from which Melody Angel sings with on "The Death Of Me". Her unique voice also reminds me a little bit of Leona Lewis on this one, which is always a good thing. The studio version, available for download above, is definitely one to vibe with, while below, you can check out the natural transition of "The Death Of Me" to a live acoustic performance, wherein Melody strums the guitar herself.

"Melody Angel of MTV’s ‘StarMaker’ Brings Her Folk-Rock-Soul Fusion from the Sidewalks to the Stage"

What would you do to be heard? Shout at the top of your lungs in the middle of a crowded, noisy room? Would you stand on a busy city sidewalk, guitar in hand, bucket out for donations, a stack of your CDs for sale, singing and playing for anyone who will listen?

Singing on a busy city sidewalk on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue is exactly what Melody Angel, a contestant on P. Diddy’s StarMaker (MTV, Sundays, 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific) did. It was on those sidewalks where Melody fine tuned her craft, playing for an “audience” who wasn’t really “audience” in the most traditional sense. At times, she took song requests from those passerbys. Some she knew well. Others she didn’t. Not wanting to disappoint her “audience,” Melody played what she knew, putting her own spin on the songs in the process.

What she did for survival developed into a unique style which she described to The Ride as “folky, with rock and funk mixed in.” Television audiences got their first taste of Melody’s style when she performed Pink’s “So What?” on the premiere episode of StarMaker. Record producer and judge Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins applauded her effort and hailed it as a new genre of rock laced with soul.

For her next performance, she took on the Kelly Clarkson hit, “Because of You.” This time Melody brought out her guitar and as well constructed a completely different arrangement of the song. The judges’ responses were mixed. In fact, it got a little heated at the judges’ table. Rodney acknowledged that the song was barely recognizable but liked Melody’s version nonetheless.Tamara Conniff, on the other hand, felt that Melody wasn’t showing proper respect to the original songwriter, arrogantly believing the she could create a better song. And LaurieAnn “Boom Kack” Gibson fiercely defended Melody’s right to do her own thing. - The Ride

"Melody Angel performs at House of Blues"

Melody Angel satisfied the House of Blues audience in Chicago recently with her rich and electrifying guitar playing and soulful voice.
Angel was an opening act at Lupe Fiasco’s album release celebration.

She said growing up many people thought she was strange because not only was she was a Black girl who sang and listened to Rock, but she also skateboarded.
“I skateboard and my whole life people used to dog me, like ‘what are you doing with that skateboard, black people don’t skateboard,’ then ‘Kick, Push’ (by Lupe) came out and suddenly skateboarding was cool,” Angel told the Defender.
Angel said the song apparently became her “anthem.”

Bio

Born and raised on the south side of Chicago.  Melody Angel began playing guitar at the age of thirteen. Even though her mother was barely getting by raising two children alone, she found away to introduce Melody to her first Fender Stratocaster by buying the guitar out of a window of a pawnshop.

Angel is a self-taught guitar player, vocalist, and songwriter who has been inspired by an array of artist such as, Michael Jackson, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Big Mama Thornton, Buddy Guy, Led Zeppelin, Guns N Roses and Nirvana and the list doesn’t stop there.

For her whole career she's been bombarded with people telling her that, “a black girl/rock star”, just won't work. However, in 2009 she caught her big break and had a chance to silence her critics.  She became a finalist on the MTV reality show, P Diddy's Starmaker.   Angel’s music demonstrates a new genre of music.  Her musical style features virtually every medium of music from hip-hop to country.

With her new self-titled EP “Melody Angel”, Melody will definitely shape the perception of people and prove that black girls can rock.

 Co-Signs:

Rodney Jerkins: “You just created a new genre of music, Punk Soul.”

P Diddy: “You were born to do this.”

Lady GaGa: “You’ve got that fire in your eye’s every star needs.”

Kelly Rowland: “You are a star”.

Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy): “If Bad Boy doesn’t pick you, give me a call.”
