Melody Guy has a positive and energetic presence that is a warm welcome to the country music scene. Recently, while Melody Guy was visiting the High Desert of Central Oregon, I was very excited to introduce her. Knowing their reputation and having heard her before, I was a bit surprised when the crowd response was on the quiet side after introducing them before Chris LeDoux. Obviously, these listeners had not heard her before, but by the end of the first song, the crowd's response again reminded me of what great music comes out of the Rose City. Even this far from Nashville, you would never think she was a Northwest based band. If Melody Guy is someone you haven't heard yet, you soon will, and remember! My best wishes for Melody Guy!

Melody Guy

Melody Guy's Indie Country Music Tour de Force Album "Ready for Sunshine" wow'd us the first time we heard it and never stopped. From the brilliant songwriting to brilliant vocal and musical performances, this collection of songs earned our choice of Album of the Year in all genres.

It is way past due for the major labels to take notice of this amazing talent. Melody's dominance in this years Country Music nominations was validated with a win for her solo penned song "The Man I Really Need."

Though her performance alone is worthy of major label consideration, her songwriting is probably even more impressive. She is more than radio ready already. (Say that 10 times fast!) There are at least 5 major hit quality songs on her album, and with the right marketing and support, some might be #1 material.

A fine example of honest writing from the heart without the cliches and crafted writing without crossing over to formulae. After hearing a slew of her new writing, I feel that 2001 will be a break out year for her as a writer and hopefully as an artist.

Stayed tuned to this girl!

"John Weisberger"

Miles of Music

Melody Guy is an Oregonian with a flair for writing songs that step right up to the edge of commercial viability without flinching or falling over into vapidity. On her debut CD Ready For Sunshine (DynoTwang), she presents a straightforward, unmannered delivery with the help of an accomplished set of studio musicians, including familiar names like Aubrey Haynie (fiddle), Catherine Styron (piano, organ) and Ray Flacke (guitar). A healthy portion of the songs were co-written with producer Chris Crawford, and others appear in the credits, too, but the musical evidence suggests that Guy has found her own groove in the writing department.

The songs are substantive, catchy and memorable, and heartbreak figures prominently, which makes them not only good but eminently cover-able by better-known (though not necessarily better) singers. The sound is mostly contemporary country, with more than occasional hints of r&b. The arrangements are supportive and tasty; the musicians have those Nashville chops and elegance but avoid the fill-in-the-blanks feeling that the A-list pickers sometimes exhibit.

This is a CD with songs that wedge themselves into your memory and pop up unexpectedly, and perhaps the best tribute to Guy's talent is that when she offers Steve Earle's "Ft. Worth Blues" as the album's closer (and only cover), it fits right in with the songs that precede it.
