Bio
The musical framework of The Davis Levels can be loosely described as folk rock, though their songwriting extends past the boundaries of any particular genre. Typically inspired by life experience, the lyrics are intensified by complimentary melodies on the keys and guitars alike, with well-placed horns on select tracks.
While living at Don's Fish Camp in San Marcos, Texas, The Davis Levels experienced a setback in the form of a house fire, whose devastation would have been absolute if not for the retrospectively strategic failure to unload the van from the previous nights show. The band (singer/guitarist Christian Hyun with Steve Anderson on drums and Carl Johnson on keys) bounced back only a few months later, adding bassist Justin Boyle and releasing their first full-length album The Beginning, which encompasses a broad time period and varies widely in style and composition. The addition of Tim Bedard in 2007 brought lead guitar, live brass, and synthesizers to the sound, and the band produced their second release, an EP, in 2008. More refined than previous recordings, the EP continued the tradition of diversity from the acoustic ballad Conscious Thought to the pulsating rock of Creaky Veins and further developed the bands distinct sound.
Now based in Austin, The Davis Levels is an independent endeavor with the band members responsible for nearly all aspects of their career, including their own recording, mixing, album artwork, t-shirt design and manufacture, and most recently an animated stop-motion music video. Booking is being done by Ryan Maskell. The finishing touches are currently being put on the first of 4 seasonal E.P.'s for 2009. The Davis Levels plans to do extensive national touring. Keep an eye out for shows and more in the months to come.
