"Meredith Rounsley’s “Let Somebody Love You” Is a Warm and Welcoming Call To Embrace Feeling"

In her latest single “Let Somebody Love You,” Nashville singer-songwriter Meredith Rounsley sings to somebody, presumably a love interest, who is scared to open up and take the risk of romantic entanglement. Such a situation requires careful finesse – one doesn’t want to be overbearing or come on too strong, but at the same time, there is a goal to accomplish, and convincing a hesitant person might take some tugging.

Her instrumental fill this spirit perfectly. The song rides a gentle groove with the drums down in the mix, a barely audible hi-hat and snare keeping time in between pulses of guitar and warm electric piano. The bass line, which follows Rounsley’s catchy melody, fills space between liens and lends the song reliable and understated propulsion. Together, these features create an amiable but unobtrusive atmosphere that adds another dimension to Rounsley’s lyrics, putting the listener at ease while keeping their head bobbing and their ears tuned in.

Rounsley starts by setting a scene, adding details as the opening verse progressing to paint a picture of a lonely love interest who is intent on keeping themselves shielded from the pain of love, but seems to be bringing themselves more harm than good. It is only when she reaches the pre-chorus that Rounsley offers her main request, pleading with her subject to soften their fear before she breaks into the titular refrain.

As the song progresses, the groove amps up slightly, with the rhythm section getting stronger and electric guitar fills becoming more prominent, following the listener’s increasing familiarity and comfort. Rousnley repeats her pleading with the aid of backing vocals, imbibing her plea with growing earnestness.

The overall effect creates something that would feel at home in a well-executed romance movie, with its simplicity and authenticity holding it well back from falling into the schlocky excess that sometimes plagues such songs. The listener feels like the center of the world, with all of the attention directed on the song’s subject, bringing them towards the good that they deserve.

“Let Somebody Love You” is available today, on all streaming platforms. Rounsley’s forthcoming EP Ember is out on August 27th. Stay tuned for more updates on Meredith Rounsley! - Glasse Factory

Salisbury native Meredith Rounsley is making a splash this summer in both regional and national music circles. The talented singer-songwriter has been splitting time between Delmarva and her adopted hometown of Nashville, Tenn.

Her busy schedule includes live performances and the release of a new EP next month. We’ve mentioned many musicians in this column recently who used last year’s quarantine downtime to film videos, and this trend has continued into 2021.

Singer-songwriter Meredith Rounsley will release a music video for her new single, "Let Somebody Love You," on Friday, July 23. She will also perform live at the 99 Sea Level restaurant in downtown Bethany Beach at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 24.
This week I got a sneak peek at the video for Meredith’s catchy new single “Let Somebody Love You,” which will be visible on various websites and social media platforms Friday, July 23.

Bio

Meredith Rounsley is a singer and songwriter who melds candid storytelling with an organic, folk-pop sound. Inspired by a life of travel and casual conversations with strangers, Meredith creates music that is warm and grounded, placing her comfortably in the company of confessional songwriters like Sara Bareilles and KT Tunstall. Meredith released a 4 song EP in the summer of 2016, Weapon, followed by her latest single, “Fluent” in 2020.

Meredith grew up in rural Maryland on a mixture of the hymns played at her grandmother’s piano and the soul music coming through her parent’s stereo. She picked up an acoustic guitar at thirteen, learning to write her own songs while joining every music program that her school offered. She eventually started playing small local venues and regional shows, following her curiosity to Australia to study music performance in college. When she returned to the states, she began recording and releasing music from her parent’s spare bedroom, borrowing their car to tour up and down the east coast.

She spent the next few years gathering a following at local wineries and restaurants while premiering at esteemed singer-songwriter venues like Rockwood Music Hall, Jammin’ Java, and The Basement. An impromptu writing trip to Nashville in 2018 became a move to town, where she experimented with new co-writers and began expanding her solo performances.

Meredith collaborated with Nashville producer Kyle Dreaden to build lush instrumentation around her acoustic guitar driven arrangements. Hints of Norah Jones’ intimate vocal delivery and Feist’s playful hooks are woven in to complement her vulnerable songwriting. The result is a collection that feels like a favorite sweater - cozy, soft, and familiar.

Meredith’s new EP, Ember, released on August 27th, 2021.
