Bio

"She walks into the lounge room and climbs on the stage. She grabs the mike, while the band starts to play. Some may not like it, but others do and after singing a song or two she leaves again. She just realised there's no deeper meaning to her life and it's alright." Wonderbras & Petticoats, 2005
Two weeks after having written these lyrics, Merel Hutten climbed the stage to perform her own songs for the first time. She had been writing music for ages, but was determined not to perform with it until it was exactly the way she wanted it. When she finally started playing her music in public, it was after her third performance that she got offered a complete album recording in exchange for some concerts. In September 2005, seven songs were recorded at the studio of the Schouwburg Amstelveen. In the first week of 2006 Merel presented the result, her debut album "Wonderbras & Petticoats", at Desmet Studios in Amsterdam.
Since then Merel has been performing frequently at venues around the Netherlands and at events like the Amsterdam Uitmarkt. She also performed live on Amsterdam FM and Desmet live. In June 2006, Merel was one of the finalists in "Mooie Noten", the Amsterdam pop song competition. In April 2007 she opened for Ellen ten Damme at KHL Koffiehuis.
Merel's album and her live performance are received enthusiastically. FRET magazine writes about "the natural appeal of Merel's music. You don't have to listen twice to appreciate it. She grabs hold of you with the first few notes, or maybe even before that with the self-conscious, but charming way in which she takes a seat behind the piano and announces her songs. [...] Merel's voice is crystal clear, the way she plays the piano is exemplary pleasantly varied and, on top of that, her lyrics are excellent. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner."
Merel's songs are jazzy, emotional and gripping, with unexpected rhythmical twists and surprising structures. Her lyrics are personal, sincere and cynical at the same time.
Besides being a singer/songwriter, Merel works as an actress in children's theatre and improvisation theatre. She teaches music to children in schools. She has also composed music for theatre performances and writes songs for children.
