In 1984 Pulitzer Prize Winner Carolyn Kizer compiled a book of poems titled “Mermaids in the Basement: Poems for Women”. Both the compilation of poems and the actual poem itself bring to life imagination, sexuality and an awakening within one’s soul.
In 1990 visionary Sheela Fortner brought to life a dream of an all female band, Mermaids in the Basement, writing and playing all original music. Through trials, tribulations, growth and experience a final mix of cohesive band mates in January of 2002 has brought to light a musical experience that touches anyone who chooses to participate.
A unique bond between all members nurtures a creative environment where each member adds value to each song through her own style and imagination whether lyrically by Sheela(Lead Singer) or musically by Jill(Lead/Rhythm Guitar), Beth(Bass Guitar), Tiffany(Violin/Backup Vocals) and Devon(Drums).
Adding to our unique music and performance we have our own sign language interpreter who performs with us at every gig. She is deaf and performs a graceful and beautiful visual interpretation of our music for our deaf/HOH audience members.
