"Opening Bell at Mosaic in Dallas"

The entertainment for the evening was Merry and the Mood Swings. This was a great show, and I can honestly say I’ve never seen a band that was anything like this one. The group is made up of all girls…..well, actually it is made up of all middle age-ish women. I know what you are thinking, and all I can say is you are terribly mistaken! These gals came to rock, and they did just that. The band was a five-piece band, with a few brass pieces and at least three people taking on the lead vocals for different songs. Even though they did play up the middle aged/mom/girl band theme a little bit, these ladies are real musicians and not just some novelty band. Their sound was pretty rocky with a 80’s/90’s flare; I’m confident they could pull off anything from Joan Jett to B-52s covers/style music if they wanted to. Some of the tunes were funny/satire songs, and others were just good old fashioned rock and roll. They had several original songs, and played a few covers including some 90’s-era Aerosmith. Their show was a lot of fun to listen to, and you could really see how much the ladies enjoyed what they were doing up there. You should definitely check them out of you get the chance; don’t be afraid to let the middle-aged mom band kick you in the teeth a little bit.

"An HP Mom and Her Band Play Dive Bars and, this Month, the State Fair"

Merry and the Mood Swings play new wave, blues, alt-country, soul and 60s- and 80s-inspired pop, all with an irreverent and whimsical lyrical bent. Given that eclecticism, they're surprisingly good. Practicing three hours a week and working on a CD to be released this fall, Merry and the Mood Swings have appeared at Poor David's Pub. This month the band plays the Women's Museum at the State Fair.
"My daughter was humiliated the first time she saw me perform," says Mary Hestand, vocalist of Merry and the Mood Swings, a gifted quintet of women in their 40s and 50s. "But when her friends saw us on TV, she decided it was cool." In Highland Park, cool moms making rock music isn't exactly the norm. "We're on the fringes of Highland Park, so my kids go to the HP schools," Hestand says. "The real HP residents probably think we're trailer trash." - D Magazine

"My Mom Rocks"

Junius Heights resident Lucy Galey doesn't quite fit the rock band persona. She and the four other women who form the group Merry and the Mood Swings are in their 40s and 50s and sandwich band practice between loads of laundry and shuffling kids to school. "My main job is my family and taking care of my home, and when you do that for so many years, you tend to lose the identity that you had as a young woman," says Galey, the bass guitarist. "Being in the band - it's empowering. It's something I've always wanted to do and haven't had the nerve to do it." Audiences at their gigs can expect standards by Everclear, The Romantics and Peter Gunn as well as original songs such as Metrosexual, an ode to a man "who looks better than me," and Trailer Park, a bluesy tune about failed expectations for marriage. "We do have a sense of humor because the world needs more of that," says lead guitarist Diane Harris. They also strive to empower younger women with songs such as Sleeping Beauty - "wake up and stop waiting for your kiss." The women cut their first CD this summer and most recently showcased their music at New York's Mamapalooza. "We're not all going to be wearing black with skulls and crossbones and white powder up our noses," says electric guitarist Mary Guthrie. "But we play like it," insists lead guitarist Diane Harris. "We can get down and dirty." - The Dallas Advocate
