Bio

Iraqi maqam is, along with the Arabandalouses clouds in Magreb or the moaxajas from Aleph, one of the most cult traditions which has been best preserved all around the Arabic world. Maqam is an erudite, mainly vocal, style which was probably already cultured in the Abbasids court. This fact makes this style the oldest in Arabia.
Les Mesopotamiens humbly search for being the first band to start climbing in what could perfectly become a renewal movement for Iraqi maqam, hoping that it will seduce others to join this adventure.
Brussels was the first destination of the leader of the group, Professor Wessam Alazzawy, making of Arabic Cultural Centre of Brussels their operations centre. Alazzawy was Professor of the Music Institute of Baghdad, which is beyond doubt the most prestigious centre in Arabia up to now.
The band has toured extensively around Jordanian, Lebanon, Egypt, Belgium, Holland, France, Germany and Portugal.
Needless to say that the present situation in Iraq is endangering, not only their monumental and artistic but also their musical heritage, specially this urban cult music which UNESCO has hastened to proclaim as "Intangible Heritage of Humanity".
