The best kept secret in music

"EP Review: Babylon Fade Away"

Messenger and the Souldiers Crew, of Traverse City, has been cultivating its own brand of conscious reggae over the past few years, and have put together a strong three single EP. This is a solo effort by Messenger, who is backed by the Souldiers Crew, shows the growth and maturity of these musicians over the past few years. Messenger throws down heavy lyrics over the strong beats and rhythms of the Crew. The political and social themes of the three songs on this EP hold true to the heart and soul of reggae. Calling for unity and the necessity to move beyond the pitfalls of Babylon, and walking the righteous path, Messenger is an up and coming force in the local music scene. This EP opens with Babylon Fade Away, a social commentary on the reality of living in the world today. The re-release of Rudy Don?t Stop is stronger and more tightly put together than its original version, featuring heavy beats and a strong horn section. Simply rocking. The final track from Messenger, entitled Sheeps Clothing, Is a political commentary aimed squarely at the political situation in the United States and the world today. I truly enjoyed this EP and am looking forward to the full album release from Messenger and the Souldiers Crew. The crew brings together a wonderful blend of guitar, organ/keys, drums and horns; making this essential to anyone who appreciates good music and talented musicians. Reggae has spread its message across the world, and those roots have now taken hold in Traverse City. Messenger and the Souldiers Crew are North-West Michigans answer to the global call to find a higher purpose in music. Respect! Praise and Thanks.

Feeling a bit camera shy

Messenger was born on July 19, 1976 in Saginaw Michigan. Inspired to play since birth, Messenger formed his first band at the age of thirteen. Messenger's grit and raspy voice did not come for free. His work ethic and belief that practice makes perfect made him successful not only as a street musician at age 18, but also in many other bands from the mid-west to the west coast and even Hawaii. His unique style and ability was partially formed from playing with musicians from places like Jamaica, Switzerland, Belize, Brazil, and Japan. Messenger's instrumental repertory includes guitar, bass, drums, melodica, Nyah-Binghi drum, and turn tables. He also has opened up for artists such as The Wailers (Bob Marley), John Browns Body and DJ Spooky.
