"Kew Gardens band plays new video in Woodside"

by Cristina Schreil, Associate Editor

Their first music video may feature an out-of-this-world setting, but the three members of Metorana, a Kew Gardens-based indie rock band, keep close to their roots.

The members, singer and guitarist Ian Keller, drummer Alex Hernandez and bassist Sam Allen, are at the end of a months-long summer tour, and many of the spots are right here in their native borough.

“They’re more supportive to a native Queens band,” said Hernandez of fans, explaining why staying focused on a Queens scene instead of trying to court Manhattan has seemed to work. “If they know you’re local, then they follow you.”

The three went to PS 99 in Kew Gardens and JHS 190 Russell Sage on Austin Street in Forest Hills.

“It would be great to tour all over, but we’d always come back to Queens,” Hernandez said. “Even if we do make it really big, it would still be awesome to play shows in Queens, for the people that started following us when we didn’t have too many followers.”

Some may recognize Metorana from playing at the Maspeth Street Fair on May 31, or in establishments such as Yerman’s in Maspeth and Paddy Quinn’s in Flushing.

A crowd packed into Maguire’s Public House, on Roosevelt Avenue in Woodside, on Saturday night for the band’s video release party. They said they chose the establishment because it has a stage perfect for a show, which took place after their space-themed video for the song “Angry, Madd And Unconscious” played on a big screen.

The song is the first single on a new album that took nine months to record in a studio on Staten Island. They finished in July.

Their music is emotional, seeming to draw from anger, heartbreak and “the torture that a man will put himself through just to spend time with the girl he loves,” according to their website.

They said they’re influenced by Nirvana, The Offspring, Weezer and Rage Against the Machine.

“There’s a lot of people that really are looking for something more real that they can’t find in mainstream radio and mainstream music,” Keller said.

Keller added that they also make a point to create albums meant to be listened to as a whole; there is a story to follow over the course of the album. Keller said it is different from many bands’ tendencies to create singles over albums.

“It’s kind of combating the ADD culture in a way, by telling the passionate love story, in rock ’n’ roll, through rock ’n’ roll,” Keller said.

Metorana will perform at The Tavern Lounge in Woodhaven on Aug. 21 at 10 p.m.
