"Mezzotono Gave a Display of What the Human Voice Can Do"

Dar Es Salaam — WELL the first thing the visiting Italian vocals quintet did, when they came on stage, was to welcome the audience with their rendition of 'Malaika' followed by greeting them in Swahili. It didn't matter that he had to read this neither, for all present at the Golden Tulip along the Dar es Salaam peninsula, on Wednesday evening, showed they appreciated the effort by giving a round of hearty applause.

Got a full house, with the larger majority being Europeans living right here in the city. Although from those spoken to throughout the evening, there were those from other regions in the country present. Wherever they came from, there was one thing they all had in common, which could be seen from their actions and that was the desire to be entertained.

Nonetheless, there were enough indigenous people there for their presence to be felt. One thing that came out right from the beginning is that the group that calls itself 'Mezzotono' - semitone in English - have nothing half about them when it comes to their sound or sense of humour.

They certainly know how to quickly establish and then maintain a lively atmosphere throughout their act from beginning to end. Hearing that their stage show is entirely built on their five voices in a-cappella mode (meaning without the use of musical instruments), one could get the wrong preconception of their act.

But after a couple numbers, one realises that their voices actually sing and reproduce the different instruments, such as a drum kit, electric bass guitar and mandolin. The originality of their performance is evident in the repertoire, which consists solely of major Italian music and varies from songs in 'Barese' dialect to some classic traditional ones from there.

This might be the case but because they employ different musical idioms like reggae, Jazz, and even rap, in their repertoire, it remains fresh and exciting to any audience. Their versatility, coupled with a large degree of professionalism, makes what they do on stage seem so easy that even the uninitiated, may be charmed into thinking it's anything as easy as it seems.

When Marco Giuliani, the baritone in the group, took up his guitar to accompany his colleagues: Daniela Desideri a soprano, Francesca Leone a semi-soprano, Fabio Lepore a tenor and Andrea Maurelli another tenor, for a solo, brought a different flavour to their act. The large range of music the five contain, cover many genres and generations, which added much colour to their repertoire.

Giuliani's fingers moving over the guitar's fret board revealed that he was also an accomplished guitarist, whether strumming or plucking the strings, with the other hand. Seems there is always time for humour from these five singers. Well they certainly know how to mix it well with a continuous stream of serious on time music, which has a strong beat behind the melody line, from start to finish.

Knowing that all the proceedings of the charity concert was going towards the 'Help a Village Project' in Njombe District of Iringa Region, brought another dimension to having a group that could hold the interests of an audience. It was interesting to see how they could incorporate sounds, like a cats meow during a song, so effectively.

Also, how they would move from normal singing to a combination of sounds, which includes clapping in time from the audience, under their direction; all in one rendition. Hearing one note of a tuning pipe now and then revealed how professional they were at keeping in tune throughout their performance.

The lively audience showed how much they appreciated the performance by refusing to allow them to stop. After-all they were an integral part of the stage act, even when Giuliani sat on a chair and made believe he was playing a drum kit, with his hands and feet making the movements but the sound coming from his mouth.

It was good to see how they could go from one mood to another just like that. The audience really showed their insatiable appetite for Mezzotono's versatile performance by not allowing them to stop. They were called back to the stage three times. For sure it can be said that these two ladies and three gentlemen represent modern day Italy but carry something of the old that cannot be named or denied.

Finally, the repeated announcements, inviting everyone to dinner, succeeded in allowing the singing quintet the chance to leave the stage. Their repertoire included Italian classics like 'La citta' di Pulcinella' and 'Il Balletto Barese' but also had numbers like Cole Porter's 'Night and Day', Stevie Wonder's 'Overjoyed', Beyonce's 'Listen' and 'That's what friends are for' by Bert Bacharach. Well, they certainly displayed what voices are for, with style. - allafrica.com
