"Micah Freeman Debuts "The Red," Announces New EP"

Micah Freeman Debuts "The Red," Announces New EP
"If I ever have to throw hands with a suit on, I'd want this joint playing in the background."

By MATTHEW TRAMMELL
Singer/songwriter Micah Freeman makes hardscrabble blues with blade-in-cheek lyrics, exemplified on "The Red." The Baltimore-born, Atlanta-based artist will release The Red EP, a self-produced five-track project, on Awful Records, and the first single features label-boss Father. "I needed to capture this angst and youthful vigor that I see and feel around me," Freeman explains to FADER. "This song wants to kick your door in and fuck shit up, however you want to interpret that. If I ever have to throw hands with a suit on, I'd want this joint playing in the background."

Micah Freeman is the multi-talented gentleman (he has been known to carry a briefcase in real life) of the Awful Media Group/Conglomerate/Tyranny. He exposes yet another side of the crew, namely his, which is this sort of funk-spirited young prince sound. He talks his shit with class. The Mike Ellwood-directed video finds him navigating the night's functions and struggles suited up, until eventually a hooded Father emerges out of some dark void for his verse. Watch them (as well as an ethereally brief Ethereal appearance) above, and stay in tune for Micah's The Red EP. - Complex Magazine

"Awful Records Singer-Songwriter Micah Freeman Paints Town Red on New EP"

Awful Records singer-songwriter Micah Freeman paints the town Red on new EP

WRITTEN BY FACT TEAM ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 20 2015

The Baltimore-born, Atlanta-based artist shows a different side of Awful.

Micah Freeman has been a part of the Awful Records crew for a while now, but most of his recorded music — his 2012 debut Timepiece and last year’s throwback Heartspace EP — pre-dates their year of ascendance.

Heartspace was intended to the be the first in of a trio of EPs that never materialized, but when Awful started popping off, Freeman thought it was the perfect time to change direction from retro-soul vibes to something more modern.

As with many projects, The Red EP is the product of a a break-up. “It led me to different phases of processing it: depression, getting over it, partying, the single love-life thing,” Freeman explains. “There was some spiritual enlightenment-seeking in there somewhere, too.”

That “emotional turmoil” led him to create something “escapist,” in the way that the tumult of the ‘70s led to disco. “There was a lot of social discord at that time, and people reacted in a party-all-night kinda way,” he says, drawing comparisons to our current moment.

While Freeman has adopted Awful’s less-than-precious approach to recording and releasing music (“I’ve stopped overthinking my songs,” he says), The Red is a bit of sonic outlier in their catalog. “It’s different from what’s expected from Awful at this point, but I think that’s a good thing — it shows how eclectic we are,” he explains. “I just want people to have fun and dance.” - Fact Magazine

Bio

Micah Freeman, a Baltimore, MD native residing in Atlanta, GA, is a lyricist, singer, producer, and multimedia visual artist most frequently recognized for his unconventional blend of musical elements of hip-hop, soul, and electronic music.

Freeman has gained attention with his music & face circulating the internet via social networks and blogs, as well as on stages, shared by the likes of Theophilus London, Miguel, Cy-Hi Da Prynce, J*Davey, Kilo Kish, Jesse Boykins III, and many others. In August of 2012, his long-awaited first album, The Timepiece was released, featuring production from industry heavyweight DJ Khalil, as well as from the Super 3 production team, a sub-group within the Odd Future collective. The Timepiece is a concept album in which the listener is led on an inter-dimensional journey by his assumed role: a Time Traveler, in search of all that is timeless. His travels through time are sonically evident in his incorporation of several elements of music from different eras & genres including (but not limited to) 90's hip-hop, 80's pop, 70's dance music, and 60's soul.

Raised in a multi-cultural household, Micah Freeman experienced his share of diversity. His father, a Jewish new Yorker, and mother an African-American South Carolinian, exposed him to the sounds of old R&B, Soul, Classic Rock, & even Yiddish Klezmer music. His older brother, Grammy nominated songwriter/guitarist Duane Covert, noted for his work with India Arie & Charlie Wilson, had a considerable influence on young Micah as well. Traces of this array of influences can be seen and experienced in his style, his sound, subject matter, and demeanor.

He is now said to be concocting a self-produced project which will move deeper into, and explore this timeless, inter-dimensional sound, one that can only be properly experienced by being Present with him. More will be seen and heard in the near future as the Time Traveler's journey continues..
