Scherrell: What is your stage name? How did you get it?

Mic-check: My Stage name is Mic-check and I got it from a friend of mine who is no longer with us. I was always the guy in the cafeteria bangin’ on the tables rappin or battling other MC’s in middle/high school. He gave me the name when Das Efx made the song Mic Checka.

It stayed with me during high school, throughout college it’s still with me to this very day....that and plus my real name is Mike.
Scherrell: What made you get into music? And who/what were some of your inspirations?

Mic-check: I got into music because it was all around me. I have friends and mentors that were already in the music business and it kinda rubbed off on me. One of my mentors was a producer for Goodie Mob, Ludacris, David Banner, etc. After watchin and connecting with those artists it made me want to get serious about the music industry. My inspirations are Outkast, Ludacris, UGK, Eminem...Jay Z.

Scherrell: So what you think about this industry so far?

M ic-check: Not what I expected. I’m not complaining, it’s just not what I expected it to be.

Scherrell: If you could, what are some of the things you would change about the music industry?

Mic-check: I would make it a LAW not to sound like everybody else., because right now, I think every song that is on the radio sounds exactly alike. I can’t even listen to it sometimes.

Scherrell: Honestly, how do you feel DJs are being treated? How you think they should be treated?

Mic-check: I love the REAL Djs....I think the DJ makes the world go round, BUT I also think SOME Dj’s try to take advantage of that power. It’s a lot of fake DJs out there taking advantage of up and coming artists.

Scherrell: Who are some of the people you would like to work with whether mainstream or independent (i.e. DJs, Producers, Artist, etc)?

Mic-check: As far as artists, I’m a huge Outkast fan, Dre and Big Boi is on top of the list. Luda, Eminem, also Bun B. As far as producers, I’ve worked with Mr. Dj from Outkast. He’s one of the producers whom I wanted to work with from the start. I would also like to work with Manny Fresh, 9th Wonder, Dr.Dre, Kanye West, and Bangladesh. Djs probably be DJ Premiere; I like his tracks as well.

Scherrell: What is something unique about you or your music profession that others wouldn’t know by reading this or listening to your music?

Mic-check: I love listening to Rock Music, and I hardly ever listen to hip-hop until it’s time to hit the studio.

Scherrell: Where you see yourself in the next 3-5 years?

Mic-check: Doing something in the music industry, even if it’s not rhyming, probably more on the lines of putting out artists on the Neighborhood Watch Label. I’m a writer, and I have a children’s book coming out as well called, “It’s Not Your Fault: The Anti Bullying Book,” so I see writing books in my future as well.

SCHERRELL: What are some of the projects you working on?

Mic-check: Just finished hosting a Mixtape for DJ Dave and the Marks Men DJs “420 Twitmix Mixtape.” Just completed the video, “Luv Hurts” and “Be Somebody” is in the works....maybe one more from the “WHAT Part of the Game is THIS?!!” mixtape. Then it’s back in the studio to continue working on my NEW project “Jus Shuddup’n Listen.” I’ve already started work on that...maybe put out what is shaping up to be an EP titled “Songs for the Lyrically Insane” later on this year or beginning of next year. Also I’ve just finished “It’s Not Your Fault: The Anti Bullying Book” which should be available in stores and online shortly.

SCHERRELL: Do you have any advice you want to give artists just starting out?

Mic-check: Sure, Do it for the love of Music, Not for the love of Money. If you’re doing what you love, the money will come. And never be afraid to be yourself. Nobody can be a better you than you.
