"Concert benefits breast cancer awareness"

With a campaign slogan like "I Heart Boobies," the international Keep-A-Breast Foundation for breast cancer awareness is bound to attract attention.
But Killeen musician Michael Carubelli went beyond satisfying a simple curiosity upon hearing of Keep-a-Breast. After visiting its website's Music for Awareness page, he began organizing a benefit concert in the area.
The Central Texas Music Fest takes place on Saturday at The Backyard at Schoepf's Old Time Pit BBQ in Belton. Doors open at 2 p.m. and the concert runs from 3 to 10 p.m. Seven greater Fort Hood area rock and Texas country acts - 7 Years Today, Lance Wade Thomas, Wally West & Them Lost Bound Souls, Stonefaced Cowboys, Jake Marlin, Stormy Lee and Carubelli - are set to perform.
Admission is $10.
Carubelli doesn't know how many people will attend, or how much money he'll be able to raise for Keep-a-Breast he said, but that's part of the excitement.
"It could be 10 people and it could be 100 people," he said. "The rush that I'm getting from the anticipation of seeing what the turnout is fun itself."
Carubelli, 25, is no stranger to Schoepf's stage. The singer-songwriter, who has opened for Ray Wylie Hubbard and the Eli Young Band, among others, plays there weekly. But breast cancer is a cause that's close to his heart.
"I lost an aunt to breast cancer in 2004, and I've seen what that horrible sickness can do," the Ellison High School graduate said. "I know what it's like when someone real close to you has it, when you're right there with them and you watch them go through it."
Beyond its funny slogan, Carubelli said, Keep-a-Breast caught his attention because its awareness campaign aims to reach young people in particular.
"'I Heart Boobies,' that might be taken as vulgar, etcetera, to certain people, but it's a smart way to get its message to the younger people that they're targeting."
Its mission is to eradicate breast cancer through exposing young people to prevention and early detection methods, he said.
Kimmy McAtee, Keep-a-Breast's California-based marketing manager, said it's never too early to starting thinking about breast cancer.
"A lot of people think breast cancer is an older women's disease," she said. But breasts develop between the ages of 8 and 25, and prevention begins then.
Information and wristbands from the organization will be available Saturday.
Additionally, McAtee said, many young people, like Carubelli, are touched by the disease in some way.
That's why Ronnie Schoepf Jr. opened the outdoor concert venue behind his restaurant to Carubelli for the benefit, he said.
"There's probably not anybody that doesn't know or have a friend or family member or somebody they're associated with you either had it or had a scare with it."
Event like Saturday's make breast cancer easier to talk about, he said.
Killeen's 7 Years Today an Americana rock band is the festival's headliner. Frontman Mylon English, a former Fort Hood soldier, has lost two family members to breast cancer, he said.
The festival's cause, coupled with the opportunity to play with many of the people he considers friends, was more than enough to sign on, he said.
"I just really appreciate that we're able to do this," he said. "It's going to be a great show. I'm excited because I usually hang out with most of these guys, but it's never at the same time."
The concert's outdoors and the weather's good, he said.
"It'll be fun."
Schoepf's Old Time Pit BBQ is at 702 E. Central Ave. in Belton. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Raffle prizes and auction items from local businesses will be offered.

Bio

Michael Carubelli was born and raised in Killeen, Texas, just north of Austin next to the largest home for our soldiers, Fort Hood. From the moment he picked up a guitar in the fall of 2007, he hasn't been able to put it down since. With this constant addiction to always wanting to improve and become a better player, chords became progressions and lyrics became songs.

Michael has always taken pride in being rooted around country music and everything that comes with it. The Texas country genre is the main driving force behind his debut album release "Here We Go." With lyrics that address the troubles of a heart break, to songs that make you ask yourself, "What happened last night," Michael Carubelli has a song to suit the listening needs of any audience member.

Recently, the development of a full band has opened many opportunities to share the stage with artists that Michael looks up to for inspiration. Michael has performed next to many Texas music acts including: Wade Bowen, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Chris Knight, Whiskey Myers, Kyle Park, Sean McConnell, Kevin Fowler, Cory Morrow, Eli Young Band, Brandon Rhyder, and Casey Donahew Band. There's no telling what the future holds for this guy but with the support of his community, family, and friends, he will continue to do what he loves.
