Michael Cavan: A Canadian Songwriter with a Celtic Connection
Michael Cavan is a Canadian singer-songwriter, born in Ireland and raised by his immigrant parents in North Bay, Ontario.
It was during his formative years that Michael found a love of music and his own Irish Tenor voice, first as a young choirboy and then as a singer and guitarist in the Irish pub scene. Now, as a mature Canadian songwriter, Michael finds himself exploring the roots of his immigrant family as he revisits an identity born in two different cultures.
The result is Michael Cavans debut folk CD called In A Hundred Years. Michael creates his own sound and blend of both Irish and Canadian folk music traditions. This recording is a new, and a familiar, blend of sounds, hook-filled folk songs that you can sing along with and even dance to.
As he works toward completing his first all-original CD, Michael explains that, the process involves finding expression for what it means to be Irish-Canadian. Being born in one country and raised in another is like living in two completely different worlds. For me, creating this CD has been a lot like building a bridge between the two.
An experienced songwriter and storyteller, Michael Cavan captures the vignettes of his Canadian life experience and expresses them through his Irish soul and voice. In line with the title of the CD and the bridging of times and cultures, Michael chose an old family photo of his grandparents and his father as a young child for the CD cover.
Michael explains, Ive always maintained a strong connection to my homeland, through the stories my parents would tell my siblings and I. At the same time I draw great creative energy from people and geography of Northern Ontario. These two worlds have inspired me to write music and songs that have personal and historical significance. My hope is that one day my children will find insight and value in this music as well.
In a Hundred Years was recorded and produced by Bill Garret. Release date is scheduled for early 2007.
