In the Halloween episode of this season’s Community, the NBC sitcom with a rabid cult following, most of the main characters re-imagined a basic slasher story with their own twist. Danny Pudi’s Abed Nadir decided to challenge horror conventions in his take, right down to one particular detail: When the two characters in his story turned on the radio to see if there were any reports of a killer on the loose, they were treated to a relaxing, smooth jazz tune. After all, that’s probably what would happen if you turn on the radio. The earworm tune went on for 20 seconds–the actual song played for nine seconds before cutting to Pudi humming the silky sax melody for a full 11 seconds–before Chevy Chase’s Pierce Hawthorne rudely interrupted Pudi’s joyful tune.

Bassist Michael Haggins is looking at his performance in the 9th Annual Free Jazz Summer Concert Series on Sunday as an opportunity to give back to the community while bringing people together. It's also a celebration of hometown success.

"I decided about 10 years ago I wanted to get my music career going and try to (become) a solo artist who can develop a following and do summer touring, maybe get invited to festivals around the world," Haggins said. "So I started writing music and produced my first CD Daybreak, which was extremely successful.

"If you just keep persevering and pushing, you'll get there."
