Award-winning Cherokee contemporary music is mixture of Native American, rock, pop, and folk. Fusing contemporary and traditional sounds, it's filled with powerful imagery. These are songs about human issues: peace, justice, suffering, the environment, relationships, and wholeness.

Biography

My professional music career began as a songwriter and guitarist in Nashville, TN. After years of moderate success, I left to pursue other interests. A personal and artistic re-birth eventually led me back to music.

My debut solo CD, Sacred Nation, received the 2003 Native American Music Award for Best Independent Recording. My follow-up, They Come Dancing, was nominated in 2004. The Journey, my third CD, received a 2006 Indian Summer Music Award, and was nominated for a 2006 Just Plain Folks Award and two 2007 Native American Music Awards.

Mystery, my next release, covering topics from the environment and politics to the ecstasy and agony of life and relationships, received two 2008 Indian Summer Music Awards, for Best Pop Recording and Best Rock Recording.

To date, I've performed at over 150 colleges and universities in 25 states, besides numerous libraries, museums, pow-wows, festivals, and fairs across the U.S. and Canada.

I'm a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. An accomplished musician, writing great songs remains my sole desire and fuels my ambition.

Lyrics

Beginnings

Written By: Michael Jacobs

Hard times have come upon us like the fruit from some bad seed
So we stand here, we wring our hands while all our dreams just bleed
No one ever knows the why or how: They say, “It just happened that way.”
Now, on our knees, we beg for rescue - for someone to save the day

Oh, oh we want a new beginning
This could be the time to start
Oh, oh a world of beginnings
Is waiting for you inside your heart

The sacred things on earth are dying and they may soon disappear
And in the darkness of their passing we will know our greatest fears
Too many lies and too much hatred - lifetimes of great suffering and pain
Can’t we find the way of truth and love – can we find paradise again?

I am not the voice of this desperate land
I’m just one more soul who’s lost in the desert sand

There are so many things I can’t figure out; I must be a simple man
Though what I don’t know would fill the seas, there is one thing I understand:

Oh, oh we want a new beginning
This could be the time to start
Oh, oh a world of beginnings
Is waiting for you
Oh, oh we want a new beginning
Hope, not fear will help us start
Oh, oh a world of beginnings
Is waiting for you, is waiting for you
Is waiting for you inside your heart

Safe With Me

Written By: Michael Jacobs

Deep inside of every woman there remains a little girl
She’s still dreaming about fairy tales and a happily-ever-after world
With a big white horse and a noble knight
Coming to the rescue and making it all right

Well, I’m no hero and I’m no saint
I do what I can and I don’t think of what I can’t
But I do hope that I can make you see:
Ooh, baby… your heart is safe with me

Maybe all our dreams come true - then again, maybe not
But there is nothing that can stop me now from giving this everything I’ve got
Though I’m rolling stones up a great big hill
And I’ve failed before, but I will keep on trying still

Oh, I’m no genius but I’m no fool
I’ll do anything and everything you need me to
Until you realize – ‘til you believe
Ooh, baby… your heart is safe with me

Your heart is safe with me, I swear
I don’t have much but it’s all yours to share
Your heart is safe with me, it’s true
‘Cause baby… my heart belongs to you

I may be a dreamer but I know what I choose
Without you, precious one, I’ve nothing left to lose
I would give my life just to make you free
‘Cause baby… your heart is safe with me
Oh, lay your pretty head down and close those lovely eyes
And dream the sweetest dreams ‘til the morning light…

Sweet Water

Written By: Michael Jacobs

I spent my life looking for truth
But I learned some things I want to forget
And I wonder after all I have seen
Do we deserve what we get?
I tried to run but there was nowhere to hide
From the deep, dark secrets I carry inside
From the wounds that never seem to heal
The kinds of sorrows no one should feel

I need sweet water to make me clean
Shower me with goodness - set me free
Sweet water, heal my pain
Let it rain, sweet water… let it rain

We may begin with our futures bright
But then the road takes unpleasant turns
So we’re left with aching ruins for lives
And some painful lessons to learn
Well, I know not all desires come true
But who hears the poor whose dreams never do?
Heaven knows this drought has lasted too long
Everybody needs some mercy before they are gone

We need sweet water to make us clean
Shower us with goodness and set us free
Sweet water, heal our pain
Let it rain, sweet water, let it rain

Why are some people born under a curse?
And their days just go from bad to worse?
They never even have the chance to be free
To live without disease, fear or poverty

We need sweet water to make us clean
Shower us with good things - set us free
Sweet water, heal our pain
Let it rain… some sweet water make me clean
Shower me with goodness - set me free
Sweet water, heal my pain
Let it rain, sweet water… let it rain
