folk/pop Americana, classic songwriting with a voice I can listen to all day (Grammy award winning engineer John Cunberti)

Biography

Michael Joy hails from the East Coast, where he fronted a few groups before migrating to the West. He's settled in Berkeley, a suitable spot for his easy mannered Americana, which is enriched with a glow of '70s era singer/songwriter charm.

He is, at the core, a folk artist, but with a pop heart. And a Zen-like sense of warmth and wonder that imbues his subtle, yet crafty, material.

Emmy nominated songwriter/producer Benjamin Birkbeck describes his songs and sounds as "a mix of Dylan, Traveling Wilburys, Beatles, Cowboy Junkies (and) The Grateful Dead with a modern alternative western rock edge." (Rivulet Music) (Miles Of Music Review August 06)

To Climb

Written By: Michael Joy

To Climb

Sweetheart while you’re waiting
Would you like to hang a while with me
I can be funny and I pay my own way
Forgive my interfering if you want to be alone
You strike me as a dancer as the dancing starts to fade
I’m just a man goin’ to die like other people do
Got no pretensions ‘bout where I’m goin’ to go
I know true love is the highest apple on the tree
But sometimes it’s fun just to climb
Sweetheart if you’re crying
Over some enchanted vagabond
I’ll do my very best to divert your pain
Don’t know what I’m after but a conquest I’m not up to
There’s a breeze ‘cross the desert with the promise of rain
I’m just a man goin’ fade like all the flowers do
Want to play through the evening ‘til the great mother calls
I know true love is the star so far above the trees
But sometimes it’s fun just to climb.

Bakersfield

Written By: Michael Joy

Bakersfield

Don’t the dust follow one
Don’t the dust follow one
Through the streets and the yards of Bakersfield
All day long in the groves
All day long in the groves
I sing out my song of love to come
When I knock on the door of Julie Long
Through the dust of the moonlight
We’ll be gone
When we drove toward the coast
When we drove toward the coast
I could tell from her silence something’s wrong
Don’t the dust follow one
Don’t the dust follow one
Our love couldn’t last past Bakersfield
And I left her on her porch and was gone
Thinking to myself
Dont’ the dust follow one
I’ll pick one more year then I’ll run
Never to return
Where the dust follows one
Where the dust follows one

Mark Twain

Mark Twain

Mark Twain Mark Twain
is on this train
Slipping through the passageways
People seek him out to stand
In the light of his hair
All aboard or so they say
We packed away our yesterday
Nothing more to do but wave
Bound for a new life
Nameless in the coach night
Child that I was I could not save
Traveling on the outskirts of oblivion
Pushing ’cross the great divide
Heaven, Hell
And the empty sky
Strangers that I’ve seen
Move in my mind
Filled with dreams and little else
Oh the tales the porters tell
Vagabonds disgraced, defamed
Bound for a new life
left my sweetheart weeping
Just to be lost without a care
Traveling on the outskirts of oblivion
Mark Twain Mark Twain
Is on this train
Slipping through the passageways
People seek him out to stand
in the light of his hair
Wild land for a wild soul
Staring out a night window
Pray the wheels don’t fail to roll
Bound for a new life
I can hear it calling
Oh California come what may
traveling on the outskirts of oblivion

Between The Lies

Written By: Michael Joy

BETWEEN THE LIES

Though the dream still looks familiar
The round of day still courses on, but
Secrets are bound to find their way to the light

Alcohol and the lonely spirit
Makes you turn again from her
Not long before the ties that bind will be undone

It’s a down and dirty story
Filled with empty alibis
Can’t you see, she can read between the lies

Punctual you always call her
You make her laugh as is your style, but
She no more believes it when you smile

It’s a down and dirty story
See it flash before your eyes
Can’t you see, she can read between the lies

You drift among ten thousand things
Under cloak of secrecy
She let you roam but you don’t see
You’re only sleeping
