Biography

Michael Joy hails from the East Coast, where he fronted a few groups before migrating to the West. He's settled in Berkeley, a suitable spot for his easy mannered Americana, which is enriched with a glow of '70s era singer/songwriter charm. He is, at the core, a folk artist, but with a pop heart. And a Zen-like sense of warmth and wonder that imbues his subtle, yet crafty, material. Emmy nominated songwriter/producer Benjamin Birkbeck describes his songs and sounds as "a mix of Dylan, Traveling Wilburys, Beatles, Cowboy Junkies (and) The Grateful Dead with a modern alternative western rock edge." (Rivulet Music)(Miles Of Music Review August 05)

- "FROM THE FIRST LISTEN of track one, "To Climb", from Michael Joy's "River Of Days"(Rivulet Music) one feels to be with a very dear friend. This is a confident debut of the east coast Joy,
that moved to the west coast, and now is living in Berkeley, California. Michael Joy has fashioned a fairly diverse and arresting mix of contemporary singer-songwriter pop, and seventies americana. These eleven songs are as catchy as hell! Fine laid back guitar lines and a beautiful groomed arrangement of each song.... Stand out songs are "Night Flight Over Water", "Bakersfield", "Mark Twain", and "Better Men Than You". This subtle CD, with certainly
commercial (positively meant) aspirations has much to offer. Considering the potency of the
songwriting, I expect in the future Michael Joy will find himself being courted by numerous
record labels. Meanwhile, there's much here to enjoy on this excellent CD, "River Of Days"

Lyrics

To Climb

Written By: Michael Joy

Sweetheart while you’re waiting
Would you like to hang a while with me
I can be funny and I pay my own way
Forgive my interfering if you want to be alone
You strike me as a dancer as the dancing starts to fade
I’m just a man goin’ to die like other people do
Got no pretensions ‘bout where I’m goin’ to go
I know true love is the highest apple on the tree
But sometimes it’s fun just to climb
Sweetheart if you’re crying
Over some enchanted vagabond
I’ll do my very best to divert your pain
Don’t know what I’m after but a conquest I’m not up to
There’s a breeze ‘cross the desert with the promise of rain
I’m just a man goin’ to fade like all the flowers do
Want to play through the evening ‘til the great mother calls
I know true love is the star so far above the trees
But sometimes it’s fun just to climb

Bakersfield

Written By: Michael Joy

Don’t the dust follow one
Don’t the dust follow one
Through the streets and the yards of Bakersfield
All day long in the groves
All day long in the groves
I sing out my song of love to come
When I knock on the door of Julie Long
Through the dust of the moonlight
We’ll be gone
When we drove toward the coast
When we drove toward the coast
I could tell from her silence something’s wrong
Don’t the dust follow one
Don’t the dust follow one
Our love couldn’t last past Bakersfield
And I left her on her porch and was gone
Thinking to myself
Don’t the dust follow one
I’ll pick one more year then I’ll run
Never to return
Where the dust follows one
Where the dust follows one

Queen Of The Underground

Written By: Michael Joy

She bends to her words
Mending in time a tune
Of a cold life below
Cold flowers ‘round her strewn
And she sings of a crime
It’s an old and doleful sound
Sometimes I hide from her
She’s the queen of the underground
Orphans from the land of the sun
Know just what she means
Who wants to go down with her
Who wants to see what there is to see
Who wants to see what there is to see
Some fight to be heard
Others live to be found
She can’t play those games
She’s the queen of the underground
(Chorus)
Who wants to go
Bathe in the river down below
Forget your name
If she holds you in her arms
You’ll never be the same

Mark Twain

Written By: Michael Joy

Mark Twain Mark Twain
Is on this train
Slipping through the passageways
People seek him out to stand
In the light of his hair
All aboard or so they say
We packed away our yesterday
Nothing more to do but wave
Bound for a new life
Nameless in the coach night
Child that I was I could not save
Traveling on the outskirts of oblivion
Pushing ‘cross the great divide
Heaven, Hell,
And the empty sky
Strangers that I’ve seen
Move in my mind
Filled with dreams and little else
Oh the tales the porters tell
Vagabonds disgraced, defamed
Bound for a new life
Left my sweetheart weeping
Just to be lost without a care
Traveling on the outskirts of oblivion
Mark Twain Mark Twain
Is on this train
Slipping through the passageways
People Seek him out to stand
In the light of his hair
Wild land for a wild soul
Staring out a night window
Pray the wheels don’t fail to roll
Bound for a new life
I can hear it calling
Oh California come what may
Traveling on the outskirts of oblivion

Night Flight Over Water

Written By: Michael Joy

If a mirror could show your heart
You’d see yourself all bathed in light
And nothing more you would desire
Nor feel deserted tonight
Lovers come and lovers go
The reasons are so incomplete
Passion’s play will unfold
It’s a damn good mystery
Try as you might
By love be led
Still it’s a night flight over water
Give what you can
Love like the wind
It’s just one more thing
We’ll never understand
If the sun could reach your soul
You’d see a place of pure delight
And nothing more you would desire
Nor feel deserted tonight
Lovers come and lovers go
Pretty words a season’s flower
Each would love to have and hold
And clothe the lonely hour
(chorus)

Me And My Stubborn Self

Written By: Michael Joy

Driving from her place
I should rest my case
But the words go round and round
And I can’t find the way out
Here I go again
Trying to speak what can’t be said
And here decide
Now, no
Here I try to tell
How losing her just has to be
To me
And my stubborn self
Ooh I have to smile
Her strength in sweet denial
Exhausted my appeals
Turned me out with gracious zeal
(Chorus)
I believe
A day or two from now I’ll be on my feet
Case is closed and, I suppose
All the words will fade into history
