"... one of Canada's best kept secrets"

Laderoute's songs are deceptively simple stories of small-town life but the emotion and maturity in Laderoute's crumpled voice make this album an exceptional contribution to the traditional singer-songwriter genre.

Beatifully recorded ... songs shaped by decades of experience and seasoned with genuine wisdom.

"CD Review - A River I Know"

"... these 10 tunes showcase the songsmith's (Laderoute) talent for crafting well-written stories and cohesive songs. . . following in the tradition of troubadours such as Clark and Van Zandt, these narratives roll along with a relaxing ryhthm . . . combining just the right words at the right time to create a rollicking cadence that will have you returning to these songs again and again." - David McPherson - Exclaim! A River I Know
(Indie) – No Number
Produced by: David Baxter
(10 Selections – Playing Time 37:13)
Looking For You / South Train / Jennifer And Rudy / A River I Know / Rounder / Lonesome Without You / Love On Hold / Lorne’s Barbershop / Full Moon Rider / Love’s Battle Scars

Michael Laderoute has spent most of his life writing and singing his songs, and playing gigs wherever they might arise…never seriously pursuing a recording career. Even this album, his first, was conceived as a second thought…the result of crossing paths with musicians he was listening to in a Toronto bar. Usually such circumstances suggest that the album is born out of vanity…not so here, as Michael Laderoute is a truly gifted songwriter, and delivers his creations with a crusty, country/blues style that is more than effective.

Born in Arnprior, Ontario (the Ottawa Valley), and now working out of Toronto, Michael Laderoute, has a John Prine feel to his music – many of the songs here are of the ‘story song” variety, with some of the best one’s coming in Rounder, Jennifer And Rudy and Lorne’s Barbershop. The album’s clear cut winner however is the high lonesome offering Lonesome Without You, while tune’s like the bluesy Love’s Battle Scars, South Train and the title track A River I Know are all strong efforts.

Produced by David Baxter (Lori Yates / Northern Pikes, etc.), the album also features session support by such notables as Blue Rodeo’s, Bazil Donovan (bass), Burke Carroll (dobro) and Lisa MacIsaac (fiddle).

MICHAEL LADEROUTE

A River I Know toont aan hoe onterecht dat is. De Canadees past in de traditie van verhalenvertellers als Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard en, vooral, Jerry Jeff Walker. Zijn interessante observaties van doodnormale mensen en alledaagse taferelen zijn levensecht. Soms letterlijk, zoals in Lorne’s Barber Shop. Some people come in just to sit / some people come for a chat / Some want their hair / combed over their ears / Others want it slicked right back. Op de achterkant van het hoesje staat een foto van Lorne voor de deur van zijn zaak. Net als in het echte leven gaat het zo af en toe ook behoorlijk fout. Met Jimmy bijvoorbeeld loopt het niet goed af in The Rounder: It’s hard to walk the straight and narrow / when you’re living in a one-horse town / They said that boy’s crazy / gotta bring that darn fool down. Fraai gemusiceerd wordt er ook. Burke Carroll strooit kwistig noten met een dobro en de fiddle van Lisa Marie MacIsaac geeft zelfs de trieste songs iets zwierigs mee. (John Gjaltema)

Bio

Bio – Michael Laderoute

Born and partially raised in Arnprior Ontario Canada, the heart of the Ottawa Valley, Michael started his musical journey at an early age by pulling a radio cabinet over on top of himself while grooving to Mac Beattie and the Ottawa Valley Melodiers at age 3.

High school bands led to gigs to put himself through the University of Toronto. Later, he played every chance he could in Toronto, northern and southern Ontario, Quebec, Nashville, Dallas, Austin, Los Angeles and any stage, pub or honky-tonk where he could find an audience for his original tunes. While in Nashville to take in Summer Lights, Michael found himself sitting around a tavern table with Guy Clark, Gove Scrivnor and Townes Van Zandt swapping songs and a guitar at a post-Clark concert.

His music has been compared to Clark and those similar troubadours, Townes Van Zandt, Joe Ely and Ray Wylie Hubbard. His CD, “A River I Know” was released Fall of 2005 and includes 10 self-penned songs. It continues to get local and international airplay.
The album was recorded live off the floor with acoustic and harmony vocal overdubs in Toronto’s The Rogue Studio with James Paul engineering, mixing and mastering, David Baxter producing and features Bazil Donovan on acoustic, upright bass, Burke Carroll on dobro, Lisa Marie MacIsaac on fiddle and vocals from Greg Hobbs and Krista Ellis. His music sounds really comfortable in the Folk/Roots/Americana genres.

Michael continues to play in the Toronto area and is currently preparing an extensive touring schedule. He recently was given the Ontario Council Of Folk Festivals (OCFF) overall top award for their Songs From the Heart competition. His song, "A River I Know," was awarded the Galaxie Rising Star of the CBC award for 2008. He is currently working on a new CD to be recorded in the Spring of 2009.
