"ONYX ROOT CD review - BLUES REVUE"

"Powers is a precise guitarist. He doesn't squander notes and he sounds like no one else. ONYX ROOT is sure to make a few Top Ten lists this year."
Jeff Calvin - BLUES REVUE

"Interview by Dave Rubin, Online Magazine"

Michael Powers is a purist. Not the kind that declares only Delta blues or Texas blues or Chicago blues to be the "real deal," but the kind that turns all of his diverse influences into "pure" musical expression. His (first) offering, ONYX ROOT, on Baryon Records, contains six originals plus the prewar Muddy Waters classic "Country Boy" and the postwar Willie Dixon classic "I Cant Quit You, Baby," along with the 60s rock classics "Shes About A Mover" by the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Count Fives "Psychotic Reaction." With his eclectic view of what constitutes the "blues," Powers makes the perfect subject for the first PlayBluesGuitar.Com interview. 2005 - PlayBluesGuitar.Com

"POWERS outlasts them ALL! By JOSHUA LIEBERSON"

http://www.StaticandFeedback.com/Music/0408mpow.html

EXCERPT
Michael was in great spirits, ripping through song after song, some originals, some covers. The first set alone featured the Hendrix cover “Little Wing, as well as “Come On (Let the Good Times Roll) and “Killing Floor. This was blues and rock melded at its best, with Powers jamming in his own world from the comfort of his chair, as well as special guests, none of whom I was particularly familiar with.

Between the first and second set, I went over to purchase his second album, Prodigal Son, which I had yet to obtain. In the process, I was told to hang out for a minute, as Powers would sign my CD and have about a 5 minute chat about upcoming gigs and such.

Powers then came out by himself, playing a mesmerizing song I had never heard. He introduced it as something completely new that was to be part of a Warner Bros. movie. - Static & Feedback Magazine

"JAZZ REVIEW Interview by Joe Montague"

http://www.JazzReview.com/article/review-5400.html
EXCERPT:
Powers says that while in his neighborhood, most of the black kids were listening to Motown and stuff like that. I was completely at the other end of the rainbow. What I was digging on was the Yardbirds. Out of the Yardbirds came some of the best guitar players you ever heard in the history of music. He rhymes off the names of Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Who is going to argue with him about that list? Although I consider myself to be very knowledgeable concerning the life of Eric Clapton, Powers reveals something that I did not know. At one time the Yardbirds backed up legendary blues artist Sonny Boy Williamson for his London gigs.

These days, the kids that grew up in Powers neighborhood are probably talking about Powers as being their friend back in the day. This tremendously gifted man has performed and/or recorded with Robert Cray, Johnny Winters, Chuck Berry and John Lee Hooker (Sr.). He can rock out with great chord progressions on the opening track Goin Down, cast haunting vocals over Jimi Hendrixs Voodoo Child, and can shift gears to sing the contemplative ballad Prodigal Son. WOW! - JAZZ REVIEW

"Onyx Root CD review - CLASSIC ROCK MAG"

"... On his first solo album (Michael) has managed to create that a rare beast: a blues album that doesn't depend on endless guitar wankery."
Scott Rowley - CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINE (UK)

"ONYX ROOT CD review - GUITAR WORLD"

"That thick, layered vibe reverberates throughout the diverse, freewheeling Onyx Root - a record defined by Powers world-weary vocals, superb acoustic electric interplay and formidable rhythm support... A stylistic tour de force..."
