Biography

SINCE THE TURN OF THE 20th CENTURY, Dayton, Ohio has been home to inventors and innovation. In that same spirit, Michael & Sandy Bashaw create original and innovative music and art. The Bashaws combine sounds from jazz, rock, ethnic and world music to produce a distinctive New World Music which is both original and familiar. Michael & Sandy perform, compose, teach, and create art in many different ways – playing as a duet, with their trio or quintet, or collaborating on song composition and film scores. Their small club quintet is called “Puzzle of Light.” For special events, college concerts and performing arts venues they present ”THEATRE OF SOUND – Sound Sculpture Concert” using large-scale experimental sculptural instruments designed and built by Michael. The Bashaws can fashion an unforgettable musical evening for any event -- from intimate to corporate.

NOTE: WE’VE JUST RECEIVED AN OFFER TO JOIN CONCERTS IN EASTERN EUROPE, ISRAEL & JORDAN (for a couple different producers). IN ADDITION, WE ARE BEGINNING WORK ON A NEW DOCUMENTARY FILM SCORE, FINISHING UP THE SCORE FOR A MUSICAL, AND IT LOOKS LIKE WE’VE FOUND A GALLERY VENUE FOR AN EXPERIMENTAL PROJECT WITH JAZZ GREAT ROSCOE MITCHELL. WE HAVE AN ALBUM OF ORIGINAL SONGS FOR A NEW CD: WE’D LOVE TO HAVE AN ESTABLISHED RECORD COMPANY HELP US AND TAKE OVER PRODUCTION OF THIS NEW MATERIAL, AND POSSIBLY OTHER OF OUR PROJECTS IN THE YEAR AHEAD.

A NEW WEBPAGE describes some of our varied projects: http://www.puzzleoflight.com/codebreakers/OLIO.htm

SARAJEVO (The Siege)
music & lyrics © Sandy Kreitzer-Bashaw

He leaned a little harder in the doorway,
He leaned a little harder in the night,
Backed into the shadows that had gathered
As the soldiers and the thunder rolled by

I can’t tell you what I’m thinking said his lover
I can’t believe that we’ve survived another night
There is terror and there’s shame inside the shadows
Come and hold me in the dawn’s forgiving light

And their days are spent in search of food and water
Until the sun drops on the mountains to the west
And their nights are spent in trying to remember
The light with which their lives had once been blessed

The streetlight it hangs like a halo
The cafes are quiet and still
And now the madness pours out of the radio
From the mouths of the men up in the hills

Down from the mountain flew the ravens
Down from the mountain blew the storms
Lady death danced the streets and then departed
And took them all away
Took them all away
She took them all away, wrapped in her arms

Set List

Our club band, PUZZLE OF LIGHT plays a lot of original jazz/world beat music, interspersed with some jazz standards such as "Equinox, " "Bye Bye Blackbird," "Naima" "Afro Blue" and "Caravan." This quintet is high energy and exotic. Flutes, harmonicas, guitar, vocals, bass, drums, hand percussion.

Our concert ensemble, THEATRE OF SOUND, plays all original music, much of which has been composed for the "Sound Sculptures," large-scale welded steel instruments which create astonishing, unearthly harmonic overtones. The compositions are rounded out with flutes, guitars and percussion. Check out the stage photos on this site. Also on this site, "Mournful Flute" features bass flute and one of the Sound Sculptures -- "Monzithor" -- give it a listen.

WE WORK in a number of disciplines and performance configurations, and we love all kinds of music. Therefore, our repertoire contains a lot of variety. You get an idea of the range of our music as you listen to the songs on this
