"EcouterVoir Dossier"

“Their music is a living melting pot which mixes jazz, world and folk music in a perpetual movement of invention and transformation. Easy to listen to, their compositions are an ode to peace and harmony, a song dedicated to nature. They communicate a profoundly spiritual vision of art and music.” - Gerard Nicollet for EcouterVoir Dossier, N̊ 124 Avril 2002

"EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE OF THE AMERICAN WORLD MUSIC ATTRACTION PUZZLE OF LIGHT"

The concert, “Night of Fusion” surely presented a rainbow of different styles. The American couple’s repertoire included music which was exotic, full of energy, as well as slow; and it really pleased the Split audience.

Their charming unpretentious approach to the audience, and great passion for music was felt throughout the concert; it could not go unnoticed.

“Even though we have spent only two or three days in Split, we have been charmed both by the city and the people,” said the artists to the audience. The did not forget to mention how Goran Karan took them through the city and was at their service the whole time.

The music was woven of world music, ethno and jazz. Split musicians of the band Tamboo as well as Goran Karan joined the Dayton artists, creating a euphoric performance. The American-Split musical partnership was the climax of the two hour concert. The combination of numerous instruments created an explosive sound, and left the audience with this impression.

In their musical opus, Michael & Sandy performed, among others, songs with the nostalgic titles, “Wild Wind, “Black Bird,” “Fishers Island,” and they even touched upon the music of India and Senegal.

Two days ago, the Bashaws played a successful concert in Sarajevo, where they introduced a unique musical instrument, called a Sound Sculpture, designed and built by Michael Bashaw. This instrument was made of steel, aluminum, piano wire and gourds, and produced a sound which is specific to their original composition, which they performed with the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra..

"concert with Dayton Philharmonic"

“Watching [performers] venture into the unfamiliar . . . makes for an edge-of-the-seat audience experience. And when they succeed, as [Puzzle of Light] did Saturday night, it’s simply exhilarating.” - Carol Simmons, Dayton Daily News, review of concert with Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, April 28, 20

"Borders Books & Music"

“Puzzle of Light drew a large crowd at Borders Books Music & Cafe for its release of the CD Music From Fallingwater. . . . Someone remarked that nobody else around does what Puzzle of Light does. Someone else said nobody else in the world does it.” - Don Henke, Dayton Daily News, Dec. 3, 2000

"Fallingwater"

“[Fallingwater] volunteer Paul Wick says . . . he’s pleased that Puzzle of Light has understood the relationship of nature to architecture and architecture to music. ‘These musicians have focused in on that in the most direct and intense kind of way, and of course the music is going to be played on Sound Sculptures that [Bashaw] has designed, and that don’t exist anywhere else in the world; so it’s really a unique musical intrepretation of maybe the most unique private residence in the world.’” Fallingwater volunteer, Paul Wick to NPR reporter Aileen Leblanc, whose story aired on NPR’s Morning Edition, July 21, 2000.

Bio

SINCE THE TURN OF THE 20th CENTURY, Dayton, Ohio has been home to inventors and innovation. In that same spirit, Michael & Sandy Bashaw create original and innovative music and art. The Bashaws combine sounds from jazz, rock, ethnic and world music to produce a distinctive New World Music which is both original and familiar. Michael & Sandy perform, compose, teach, and create art in many different ways – playing as a duet, with their trio or quintet, or collaborating on song composition and film scores. Their small club quintet is called “Puzzle of Light.” For special events, college concerts and performing arts venues they present ”THEATRE OF SOUND – Sound Sculpture Concert” using large-scale experimental sculptural instruments designed and built by Michael. The Bashaws can fashion an unforgettable musical evening for any event -- from intimate to corporate.
