MICHAEL ST. GEORGE - THE DUB POETIC EDU-TAINER
Definitely Toronto's hardest working dub poet. The supremely talented writer has a commanding voice and a charismatic stage presence that few can match - Word Magazine, 2003
Michael St. George is a writer, performer and educator. His conscious verse and fresh musical sound has earned him industry awards and peer recognition both nationally and internationally.
Inspired by his working class upbringing, St. George's work is dedicated to justice and social equity. As a second-generation dub poet, he has continued to remain true to the ideals of the form. His message is thought provoking, positive, spiritual, and seeking to incite change, while his sound follows the traditional dub poetry approach with a twist the uncompromising, syncopated, hard-driving baselines and melodic forms infused with other influences such as ska, rhythm & blues, and jazz.
Born in Portland, Jamaica, Michael St. George grew-up in August Town. His latest album, Dubbin' de Vibes continues to give a voice to what he calls, 'Those who have struggled and those struggling to find the basic needs to survive'. It raises questions about modern life and urges responsibility for the current state of our world. The album solidifies the upward progression of St. Georges career and highlights his incredible depth and range as an artist.
It is this universal appeal that has made him a staple in the Toronto arts and festival scene and gained him recognition as the poet with the fire of the human spirit. St. George has twice been named Caribbean Crucible Dub Poet of the Year and has won Poetry Slam competitions in Canada and the UK. In addition to his musical recordings, he also published Night Spin, a book of poetry in 2001 that takes the reader on a journey through the night as seen through the introspective eyes of the author.
With a diverse and growing following, St. George delivers to his audience a truly inspired outlookinsightful, spiritual, intelligent, and passionate. St. George pushes the boundaries of both song and poetry, carefully crafting his concern and advocacy for the marginalized and the oppressed through the art of wordpower and the cadence of the reggae beat. With this spirited mix of words, music, and movement Michael St. George continues to prove again and again, his relevance as an important recording and spoken word artists in the cultural and music scene today.
St. George also brings this philosophy to his role as an educator. He regularly conducts workshops and performs for students of all ages. This expansion into the world of education is a natural one for St. George, providing the opportunity to engage children and young adults in a dialogue of social issues. It also firmly attests to his ability to bridge generation gaps, something that many artists attempt, but very few succeed in doing.
