Bio

A native of Zurich, Switzerland, Michael Vitali had just turned 18 when he first picked up a pair of drumsticks. After having graduating from the Gymnasium one year later with a degree in ancient languages, Vitali made up his mind not to pursue a career in linguistics, but instead to become a professional drummer.

In 1994, Michael Vitali first established himself as a drum teacher. While Wolfgang Bayha was on sabbatical producing his own record, Michael was entrusted with Bayha's entire studio, continuing the education of approximately thirty students. In 1997 Michael toured Switzerland with the British band The Mighty Qart. During that time, Michael attended the Swiss Jazz School Bern, where he studied with the great jazz drummer Billy Brooks.

Michael played in many of the most prestigious jazz clubs around Zurich in 1998 and 1999 with his own ensemble, the Michi Vitali Quintet, and appeared twice at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy. After winning a BEST Scholarship, Michael Vitali enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, graduating magna cum laude in 2001. Some of his most influential teachers were Ian Froman, John Hazilla, Jamey Haddad, Bob Gulloti, Jeff Galindo, Joe Hunt, and Hal Crook.

In addition to being a jazz musician, Michael has also had a strong and enduring connection to the theatre. He has been both drummer and bandleader for productions of Texarkana Waltz (Matilda Productions) and Midnight Sun (Gloucester Stage Company) and composed original music for Boston Theatre Works' production of Macbeth.
