Biography

Drawing influence from prolific songwriters Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, Jill Scott, Bjork, and Portishead, singer/songwriter/composer Michelle Amador has created more than 100 works to date. Beginning piano study at age 6, she wrote her first song at age 12 and by age 21 had already written a full-length musical along with music for USC theater productions of Woyzeck and Antigone.

She studied jazz piano/arranging from her father, Peruvian pianist/composer Augusto A. Amador and jazz pianist/arranger Don Haas (Stan Getz Orchestra). She studied jazz solo voice from Downbeat award-winning educator Roger Letson.

In 2004, Amador was selected as one of 60 out of 2,000 applicants worldwide to participate in the Red Bull Music Academy: Rome (a two-week electronic music symposium). In 2005, Amador served as Creator/Artistic Director of Jazz Beyond sponsored by Adobe Systems as part of the SJ Jazz Festival, an annual free festival attended by 150,000 people each year.

In 2006 she was featured as a solo artist (accompanying herself with Rhodes and sampler) at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. In 2006/2007, Amador recorded with UK producer Zed Bias and separately with German electronic group Karma to produce electronic/pop single releases featured on Gilles Peterson’s Weekly World 60, PopMatters, and DJ playlists worldwide.

On April 18, 2008, Amador released HIGHER (produced by Zed Bias) in Japan which will be followed by a UK release in summer of 2008.
