Introducing Michelle Matlock's one woman show The Mammy Project. This show investigates and deconstructs the American stereotype, myth and icon of Mammy. Using original music, storytelling and historical speeches, The Mammy Project uncovers an untold American history.


Michelle Nicole Matlock a native of Washington State, graduated from the National Shakespeare Conservatory in New York City. She began developing her so lo show THE MAMMY PROJECT in 2001 and has since been presented by P.S 122, The Harbourfront Centre’s Toronto Black Culture Festival, Eastern Connecticut State University, Dixon Place, Goddess Festival, chashama and The Bindlestiff Family Arts Inc. Michelle has worked as an actress for Moonwork Inc. (The Diviners, Richard III, A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Fay Simpson’s Impact Theater (Raging Women, Ancient Women) and Crossbreeding Productions (Lion In The Streets, A Tale Of Two Sillies). She has also been featured as a physical comedienne in Circus Amok, The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus and The Daredevil Opera Company‘s "Circus Inferno". Often Michelle is a professional clown for The Big Apple Circus Clown Care and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s Krooze Komics. Recently Michelle was selected for the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation's Artist & Communities 2005 residency at The LGBT Center in New York City.
