""Comedian Michelle Thomas""

Brassy and sassy, comedian Michelle Thomas has a unique take on family, marriage and kids. She’s ready to tell Rome residents about it and will get that chance on Saturday night.

Thomas, originally from Dallas, Texas, performs at MB’s Comedy and Event House Saturday. Currently living and working in Polk County, however, she has quite a humorous perspective on the quirky nature of her job and her relationships.

“My material is mostly based on my life,” she said. “A lot of it is about my redneck family or being married. I run an in-home daycare so I get a lot of funny stuff from that, too. Basically 90 percent of my act is based on my husband, my relatives and my work.”

Thomas has been living in Georgia for four years but has been a professional comedian for seven years. She has performed all over, from California to Ohio and from Tennessee to Alabama and the Carolinas.

She also does a monthly show called The Homegrown Comedy Show in Hiram with fellow comedian Tammy Jo.

Thomas said this will be her first time performing at MBs and local audiences can expect to hear about everything from the chaos of running a daycare to being married to a “crazy hunter husband.”

“He calls himself a hunter,” she said, “but in two years he hasn’t shot anything but himself.”

And although “Michelle Thomas” isn’t a terribly exciting name for an entertainer, she’s fine with that. With the recent trend of parents naming their babies where they were conceived has sparked a wave of unusual baby names, including Thomas’ cousin, Chevy.

“I’m glad they named me Michelle,” she said. “If they had named me after the place I was conceived I would have been called ‘Porta Potty at a Whitesnake concert’.”

Michelle Thomas appears at MB's Comedy and Event House, 836 Turner McCall Blvd., starting at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $10.

Bio

Growing up the oldest of three in a completely dysfunctional family in Texas set Michelle up for one of two things; she could either become a sociopath or a comic. She chose comic.
"I've always considered comedy a form of therapy; if you can laugh at your experiences, both the good and the bad, then it makes them a little more bearable. What's that saying "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade?" Well, I prefer, "When life gives you lemons, come up with a good punchline."
At 19 she took the stage for the first time at the world famous Improv Comedy Club.
"I had taken this comedy class and this was our "graduation" performance. I wanted to barf, I was so nervous. I told myself, if this doesn't go well, I'm never doing it again. If it DOES go well, I'm never turning back."
Michelle's clean, original approach to comedy manages to make you laugh, without offending.
"People always want to know what TYPE of comedian I am. What my THING is. To be honest, I don't think I have one. I can't sing, play an instrument or do impressions and I don't have a puppet. To me, there is nothing funnier than real life. My comedy is all about me, my life and the people in it. Chances are, if you've ever had friends, a family, a significant other or a job, you should be able to relate."
In 2004, Michelle relocated to Atlanta where she has continued to make a name for herself by appearing at the nation's top comedy clubs as well as making two appearances on Comcast Cable's "Comics on Demand." In addition, Michelle is involved in a number of charities, raising money for breast cancer research, children's hospitals and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Whether she's performing at a sold out comedy club, church, theater or even the local open mic down the street, Michelle's quick wit, sarcastic charm and instant likeability has made her a hit with audiences everywhere for years.
