Bio

Born with significant deformities to his two arms and a leg, from his earliest age Michel Tirabosco always wanted to try to do things “like the other children”. With remarkable will, the support of his family and the immense love of his mother he succeeded in doing just that. Attracted to music very early, he couldn’t imagine, however, how he might play an instrument without any fingers – but that was without taking the panpipes into consideration. Michel Tirabosco completed all of his classical flute studies with this instrument. He is now a virtuoso renowned for his exceptional musicality, instructor for panpipes – a position created specifically for him – at the Nyon Conservatory of Music (located between Geneva and Lausanne). He not only performs the complete classical repertoire for transverse flute but also jazz and folk music on his instrument. A number of compositions (including concertos with symphonic orchestra) have been composed for him. Michel Tirabosco has given the panpipes their patent of nobility.
With each performance, more and more frequently throughout the world, Michel Tirabosco conveys an immense sense of hope and encouragement in addition to a profound joy for radiant music.

Classically trained, and a concert performer since the age of 14, he has an international career elevating the panpipes to the ranks of the great soloist instruments.
Michel Tirabosco revolutionized the world of panpipes by tuning his in C Major and adding a first pipe in C, thus covering the same register as the transverse flute.

The diameter, the thickness and the length of the tube were also changed to suit the needs of traditional play. Impassioned by the sound and legato, he is always trying to improve the expressive, rich sound of his instrument.

His father Antonio Tirabosco has a workshop for the manufacture and sale of panpipes in Geneva.

Born in Rome Italy in 1968, Michel Tirabosco settled in Geneva, Switzerland. He studied at the Geneva Conservatory, where he became the first student ever student to carry out a transverse flute certificate with the panpipes. This, as well as his Musical Diploma at the Geneva Higher Conservatory and a Panpipes Master Diploma at the Higher Institute of Music in Geneva, have awarded Michel many prizes. He currently gives master classes and teaches students in professional classes in different conservatories and academies.
Michel Tirabosco has continued his career of soloist and concert performer since the the age of 14. At 16, he played his first concerto as a soloist with a symphony orchestra and recorded his first disc. Because of his talent, the press considered him the young wonder of the panpipes.

At the age of 18, he began his career as a soloist at the sides of famous artists, such as the violin-cellist Christian Benda and the actor Jean-Luc Bideau. He toured with Marcel Cellier, producer of Gheorge Zamfir. He recorded two CDs with Andre Luy, the organist of the Lausanne cathedral, and the celebrated harpist Chantal Mathieu. Then, he left on tour for South America and Europe with the Argentinian pianist Miguel Angel Estrella.

Since 1993, he has regularly been invited to the castle of Bourglinster to play in the presence of the Duke of Luxembourg. He was selected to give the closing concert for the Contest of Composition of the Marie Queen of Italy. In 1997, in collaboration with the Embassy from Switzerland in Washington, he carried out a tour of twelve concerts in the United States, in particular the prestigious Myra Hess Concert in Chicago. In 1998, he was also invited by the Orchestra of the European Communities to interpret, in Turkey, the Concerto for flute, harp and orchestra of W.A. Mozart.
