Biography

There is something very real about Mick’s songs; a fresh dynamic of folk/rock with a twist of country, they are from the heart, with something new to discover in each listen.

Singer/songwriter, Mick Peaker, the son of a missionary pilot, grew up mostly in Papua New Guinea, but is originally from Hervey Bay, Queensland.

Mick started playing music when he picked up a guitar and wrote his first song at 19.  Mostly self taught, he left Hervey Bay and his job as a welder, and moved to Sydney to study vocals and songwriting.

Michael produced his first EP, ‘Beginning the Dream’, in 1998. In 2002 he wrote and produced the song ‘Heartbeat of Africa’ after visiting an orphanage in northern Uganda; and in 2004 he co-wrote and produced an album ‘After the Rain’ with Elizabeth Connolly.

In 2007 he formed the band ‘Mick Peaker and the Usual Suspects’ who successfully played around the Northern Beaches of Sydney until 2011. The highlight of that time being their 2010 “World Tour” of Sydney, Gundagai and Albury.

Mick’s most recent EP, ‘One For The Road’ (2016), is an acoustic based collection of songs, ranging from the haunting tones of ‘There Was A Time’, to the toe-tapping hopefulness of ‘Laugh Love Live’.

Now living in Melbourne, Mick endeavours to write music that is authentic, that connects and resonates with the listener and their own story:

“Probably, the most significant musical memory I have is when I was about 6 years old, listening to my parents cassette tape of Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Wednesday Morning 3 am’. I remember feeling the emotion of those songs. Even though, at that age, I really didn’t know exactly what the songs were about, they still affected me.  It’s this type of accessible connection I hope to create for people in my writing.”

Lyrics

There Was a Time

Written By: Mick Peaker

there was a time when i was young
there was a time when i was free
there was a time i had fun playing in the water
there was a time when i was me

but now those days are gone
and now those days have left me
and now those days are drowned in the ocean
in some place called memory

there was a time when i could love
there was a time when she loved me
there was a time in the sun we’d swim in the river
there was a time when i could be

the sun is rising
out from under the horizon
a fire is rising from the sea

Rose in a Garden

Written By: Mick Peaker

there is a rose in a garden
that is just out of reach
and so i imagine
its fragrance so sweet

i think of what it’s like to feel
those petals on my lips
or the sting of its thorns
upon my finger tips
but i can only imagine
for it’s just out of reach

i could be lost in your perfume
i could be half way to the moon
i could drink wine straight from your lips
I could be flying sailing ships

but i can only imagine
for it’s just out of reach

Heartbeat of Africa

Written By: Mick Peaker

My heart in the hearts of my children
That’s the sound of the hope of Africa
Hear my heart in the hearts of my children
That’s the sound of the heartbeat of Africa

My heart in the hearts of my children
That’s the sound of the peace of Africa
Hear my heart in the hearts of my children
That’s the sound of the heartbeat of Africa

See the lion wander through the Serengeti
He listens for the pounding rain
Hear the thunder echo through the distant valley
Hear our drum song rise again

My heart in the hearts of my children
That’s the sound of the song of Africa
Hear my heart in the hearts of my children
That’s the sound of the heartbeat of Africa
