"Student balances academic career with rap career"

............................................................................ ....

Myke Carmody is a Wayne State sophomore and Media Arts and Studies major who manages his academic career with a rap career. ....

Myke is a prime example of how it is possible to get what you want through hard work. ....

Under the alias "Myke Murda," (a homophone for Mic Murder) Carmody is an aspiring rapper. Music has been part of Carmodys life since he was young.....

Previously, he was a drummer in downriver band “Abby Martin”, and moved on from that once he started to occupy himself with hip-hop. He started with small rap face-offs while climbing the ladder and was recently signed by Retro Dance Party records.....

He will be giving a live performance Jan. 22 at 6pm at the Modern Exchange in Southgate. This night is meant to display Carmody and other local bands that have been signed under RDP records.....

The show will be filled with a mix of genres including pop-rock, hardcore hip-hop. It is meant to force many people out of their single-genre bubbles, exposing them to music they potentially would not listen to.....

Other bands to look forward to that night are The Trophy Boys, Gloves Off, Lights Out and more. For most of the artists performing, this will be their first chance to put their music out there for people to hear.....

Carmody will perform songs from his new CD “When I Grow Up…”, which will be available for sale at the show; some songs include: "Open Your Mind," "Trippen’," and "My Studio Song."....

He will also be freestyle rapping and asking if any audience members would like to come onstage to partake in a rap battle, which will engage the audience and get them riled up and excited.....

RDP records is also hoping to get a mini-tour started soon to expose all the artists even more.....

Carmody has an energetically innocent voice that contrasts to his sometimes not-so-innocent lyrics, like in his song “No Skanks.”....

Bio

Now a day, it seems that the industry is losing its sense of realism. Enter Mic Murder; a 20 year old emcee residing just outside of Detroit. Growing up with his roots deep into the metal and hardcore scenes, the need for a thriving live show, as well as music that reaches deep into its listener’s cerebellum was imperative for any endeavor he would pursue. Fast forward ages 15 through 18, the stages of his life spent drumming for touring hardcore bands as well as in-home and school production left Myke with a full schedule at a young age. At 19 Myke hit the road solo bringing crowd’s hip-hop with a twist. Naming his own unique style “rock-hop” a phrase customized to the artist himself, he feels it suits the heavy energy of his performances, with the classic verbalization of hip-hop emcees. Myke is trying to bring back to feel of lyrics and songs with a meaning to an industry full of soulless clones. His second EP When I Grow Up which is one of three installments to his origin trilogy CD’s, sold 400 copies independently with little promotion and showcases how he came about emceeing, and the heavy topics he deals with such a social unrest, corporate corruption, and the failing economy, just for starters. After releasing multiple mix tapes free via MySpace and other social networking sites, as well as the old fashioned handing out free CD’s to anyone who would take them, Myke was able to start performing shows. Hooking up with past venue promoters, he was able to start bringing hip-hop into a scene filled with not your average rap junkies. This allowed Myke to expand to a broader audience then just hip-hop. At an average Mic Murder show you can see people of all ages and genres rocking out, to what is mostly considered hip-hop but still remains unique. Although an underground artist, Myke believes that since he came from a place of no connections or silver spoons, he will be able to enter tabula rasa (a blank slate) into the industry. A promise made for himself to reach the top is something that seems prevalent in all of Myke’s messages as a main drive for all his actions on and off stage. The only real question that remains unanswered is, are the people ready to unplug from the bullshit?
