"Mic-Rob"

Pronounced "Mike Rob",
Within its half decade, Mic-Rob has caught on expediently. While many new talents strayed towards cookie cutter music that trades quantity for quality, Mic originally from LA. emulated talents, such as Slum Village, Nas and even The Dogg Pound in slow-crafted, conceptual music.
In early 2009' Mic teamed up with crooner and former Drummer for bands “Audiovent and Under the Influence of Giants” Jamin Wilcox on smash hit “I know What You’re Doing” top the Wild top twenty countdown for three straight weeks. Also available on i tunes.
Like the golden era icons, Mic-Rob, while quietly creating his debut album, has focused on making sure their live show is well…live. Mic has performed in Sacramento and San Francisco, as well as consistent show openings in Reno for superstars like Grammy Award winning Brandy, Game , Too Short, Digital Underground, Baby Bash, Biz Markie, Naughty By Nature , Mike Jones, Nelly, Paul Wall, Chamillionare, Snoop Dogg , X Zibit, The Luniz, The Clipse, Fabulous, Bone Thugs in Harmony and Yukmouth to name few. With all of his endorsements and props, Mic-Rob reminds his fans that this is by no means an overnight success. Let’s just say this is an artist that’s focuses on chemistry above the popular rap expectations.
Nevada Hip Hop is nearing its peak in the end of the decade. As styles, faces and crews may change, the brother from Reno reminds you that it is was and forever will be about the music.
In Late January Mic’ s album “Strange: The Adventures of Microphone Robinson” hit’s the racks with street hit’s “Be Like Me” and “Good God (a remake of Yes’s “Owner of a lonely Heart”).

"Gift Rap"

While a “Christmas in Hollis” is probably familiar to hip-hop fans, because of Run DMC’s 1987 seasonal track of the same name, celebrating a Christmas in Reno old-school hip-hop style just got a little easier, and a whole lot merrier.

Thanks to local promotion group Speak Your Mind, on Thursday, Dec. 16, the Knitting Factory will host an all-ages celebration any good hip hop fan can appreciate—appropriately titled: A Reno Christmas Story.

Featuring more than 15 local acts covering classic hip-hop songs, including the occasional Christmas cover, the showcase is meant to not only celebrate the roots of the music style, but also to encourage community support and charity during the holiday season. The optional $7 cover goes to the local charity group the Holland Project—which provides musical opportunities for teens.

Speak Your Mind is also teaming up with the U.S. Marines in sponsoring a Toys for Tots toy drive. Anyone who brings a gift to the show gets in for free. An additional present to the community is that those who wish to attend but can’t afford the door charge gain entry regardless. The goal isn’t to make money, but simply to spread some cheer this holiday season.

“I really just wanted to have fun with it,” says Speak Your Mind promoter Daniel Hubbard of the Christmas themed showcase. “We’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time. We were just waiting for the right chance to do it really big, involve some charities, and get the hip-hop scene involved.”

Solid performances can be expected as the acts involved aren’t novices to the scene. They’ve performed around the city long enough to draw a solid crowd each their own. “I would say this line-up is one of the bigger name line-ups of the Reno hip-hop artists,” says Hubbard. “Most of these people have been doing shows out here for 10 years.” The performers include local favorites Locus, Emic and The Apprentice.

While the show’s title is A Reno Christmas Story, not every act involved is set to perform a seasonal ditty. In fact, only about three of them are. The spotlight is more centered on bringing back the hip-hop oldies.

“We’ll have some hip-hop Christmas songs,” says Hubbard. “[But] it’s just a fun name so we can involve the toy drive and then redo it every year around the holiday. Most of them are doing one of their favorite songs from when they were growing up. The performers are in their 30s, but the fans are going to be 25 and under, so it’s a good way to show music to [them].”

Of course, some of the acts are choosing to do both. Artist Michael Robinson, a.k.a. Mic-Rob, who also had a hand in organizing the event, is performing both a 20-minute set of classic covers, as well as throwing in a Christmas song at the end. He’s excited for the occasion because it’s a chance to show a different side of hip-hop.

“Usually people get the idea that hip-hop is one type of show where we just walk around with a mic and rap,” says Robinson. “That’s not the case with this show because it’s for a reason—for Toys for Tots and bringing the Christmas spirit to the community.”

For others, it’s a chance to teach young fans what the current acts were inspired by.

“I want the youth to understand where the history comes from,” says event organizer and performer Iain Watson, a.k.a. Emic. “If you don’t know where you’ve been, you don’t know where you’re going. … Everyone likes to do covers, that’s why karaoke’s so big.”

"Microphoning It In"

Sounding “mainstream” can be political suicide for a rapper in Reno’s hip-hop scene. And for good reason—a lot of mainstream rap music sucks.

Hip-hop culture split into two separate identities when the genre became socially accepted in the early 1990s: the mainstream, which you hear on the radio; and the underground, which is appreciated by a smaller but arguably much more devout fan base.

The theory behind the split, from the underground perspective, is that underground rappers can push artistic boundaries because there is no label pushing their music in a certain direction for commercial success. The focus tends to be on deep, introspective lyrics over solemn beats. This freedom has resulted in some of the best hip-hop music of the past 15 years.

Mainstream hip-hop, on the other hand, has been plagued with stereotypes that rappers are forced to subscribe to, whether or not their lives actually fit the bill. Lyrics about guns, selling drugs and getting women have dominated mainstream hip-hop. The catch to the survival of the lyrically inferior mainstream hip-hop is that it’s catchy and easy to dance to.

As with much of America’s entertainment, consumers have learned to filter out any actual message and accept anything that sounds catchy or looks pretty.

Local rapper Michael “Mic-Rob” Robinson basically has a mainstream sound without all the ignorance attached to mainstream hip-hop.

“It has a melody to it and a message to it,” the 28-year-old Los Angeles native and current Reno resident says of his music. “Even though I speak on serious topics, you got to make people feel good—especially the ladies.”

“The day I come out and say I got a gun … how much drugs I got—that day, turn me off,” he says. “It’s kind of killing the future of hip-hop.”

It’s refreshing talking with Robinson about hip-hop culture. He’s an obviously intelligent, gifted and ambitious rapper trying to make it in a music industry that doesn’t always appreciate intelligence.

This interview happened to take place on a very symbolic day—Nov. 4. It doesn’t seem all that long ago that Jay-Z was rapping about “Big Pimpin,” not campaigning for America’s next president. A slew of other rappers have all cleaned up their acts, as well.

One can’t help but wonder if mainstream hip-hop is going to begin to conduct itself with a bit of class. If so, Robinson might have the perfect opportunity to slide right in.

He’s working on an album, The Adventures of Microphone Robinson, which is set to be released in March 2008. He’s also talking with various labels and managers.

Local musicians of all genres always talk about how they’re going to make it big in the industry, how their music is unique, how they’re talking with so and so from some label. It’s naïve of anyone to believe every musician or rapper who talks the talk, seemingly just for the hell of it.

But Robinson might really be on to something. A rough draft of his new album possesses all the elements of other mainstream albums, but with a pleasant dose of intelligent lyrics. The music isn’t too serious to keep you from dancing to it, but not so dumbed down you feel guilty for doing so.

Within its half decade, Mic-Rob has caught on expediently. In 2005 Mic began working on his street album “Story to tell” a recount of Mic growing up in Los Angeles and the ills of the music biz. In mid 2006, Mic-Rob appeared on “The Capitalists mix tape vol.1”, as an original mix tape combining original content over up and coming producers music to represent the state of hip hop today.
With a strong internet following ROB again went to the booth and began his new and forthcoming album “Strange” his debut studio album. Without a major backing Mic-Rob has earned himself a major look from hip hop fans alike. The album delightfully forgets the idiocies rap music has taken in the mainstream, and simply affirms that good music is and will always be timeless.

In early 2009 Mic teamed up with crooner and former Drummer for bands “Audiovent and Under the Influence of Giants” Jamin Wilcox on smash hit “I know What You’re Doing” top the Wild top twenty countdown for three straight weeks. Also available on Itunes.
