"Notes From The Pub"

"Had a fine time watching Danny Smith and the Midnight Shuffle Kings work out (at the Big Chill). They were polished, but impromptu when needed (there were lots of requests from the audience). Musicians this good are exactly why I started this newspaper 28 years ago." - Nightflying Magazine

Bio

The Midnight Shuffle Kings are seasoned group from Hot Springs, Arkansas that specialize in Blues music but are equally at home with a variety of genres such as Rock, R&B and Country. With over 25 years professional playing experience per member, the Shuffle Kings are not lacking in experience or versatility. Each member is a veteran of the trenches and the road as well as different styles over the years of playing nightclubs, festivals and other venues. Most of the venues played over the years have been in Southwest Arkansas from Little Rock to Texarkana, with the bulk of gigs in and around the Hot Springs club scene. But some have been in places outside of Arkansas such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Memphis and Chicago among others. A collective number or list of gigs would be almost uncountable (or at least too difficult for members to remember without getting a headache).

The Midnight Shuffle Kings were formed by founding member and lead guitarist Danny Smith in 1994 along with drummer Steve Danger. After years of playing together off and on in various bar bands, they started the Shuffle Kings along with Al Jones on keys, Rooster Meeks on doghouse bass and harp player Greg Batterton, who still performs regularly with the band. In the years that followed the lineup changed very little but AJ was eventually replaced by keyboardist/guitarist Scott Arivett, and longtime veteran Gary Stutz later took over on bass. The current lineup as it exists today are as experienced a group of musicians as you could find. Current members have opened for many well known acts over the years. The list is too numerous to include them all, but a few are:

Ike Turner
Etta James
Dick Dale
Coco Montoya
Guitar Shorty
Wille Big Eyed Smith
Smokin' Joe Kubek
Leon Russell
Merle Haggard
Marty Stuart
Hank Williams, Jr.
John Anderson
Gene Watson
Dr. Hook

And most recently:
#1 Country Artist Justin Moore in September of 2009

One of the greatest thrills for the Shuffle Kings came back in 2007 when they backed Pinetop Perkins for an entire show at Maxine's in Hot Springs. And the band had the pleasure recently of backing blues legend Buddy Flett at the Big Chill (also Hot Springs) in the spring of '09. Danny Smith is the backbone of the Shuffle Kings. Widely known as one of the best guitar players anywhere, Danny has shared the stage with the likes of Michael Burks, Anson Funderburgh, Wes Jeans and others.
