"South by Southwest Festival in Austin,TX 2003"

The music officially started on March 12th, but the film festival had the streets crowded well before that. As a result, local bands not affiliated with SxSW got to play to some new ears earlier in the week. One such act played at the Flamingo Cantina on March 12th as the promising Austin quartet, Mikado. The band combines a roots/rock/reggae approach with a psychedelic angle, performing ambitiously crafted originals amidst assorted covers. Mikado pleased the crowd with tight versions of the Talking Head's "Heaven" and Bob Dylan's "Man in Me" but also challenged them with original tunes like their original dub exploration called "Igloo" featuring an impressive solo by drummer Shadd Scott. - Jambase.com

Bio

Mikado fuses a wide range of funk, jazz, and world music sources with the visceral power of classic rock and energy music.

Drawing inspiration from artists as disparate as The Grateful Dead, Phish, Bob Marley, Miles Davis, Carlos Santana, John Coltrane, and Pink Floyd, Mikado specializes in shattering the usual boundaries of groove-oriented music. They emphasize rhythmic energy and dynamic improvisation to create a sound that probes uncharted area while remaining rooted in the music that has enlightened them, with a spirit of joy and a sense of humor. Inspiration and invention are their goals, and the results are often tantamount to a force of nature.

The core of Mikado was formed years ago through the friendship of Tripp, Matt, Shadd, and Kris as they grew up in Houston, TX. Joe showed up at their doorstep in September of 2003 and soon became a member of the family, thus beginning a new chapter in the band's growth and development.

Mikado has been building a following by playing shows frequently in Texas. Mikado has shared the stage with bands such as Olospo, Moses Guest, Moving Matter, Groovin' Ground, Larry, Gary Clark Jr., Plump, The Hightailers and Perpetual Groove. Mikado is currently planning tours and pushing towards developing a national presence.
