Mike U interview
(Block2Block issue 42)
First off, start by introducing yourself. Give us some background on yourself like where you are from and how did you get into music?
My real name is Mike U. The letter ‘U’ is the 1st initial of my last name which is of Nigerian decent. My mom is from Louisiana. My artist/stage name that I go by is Mike University, The Rap Graduate … or for short Mike U. The Rap Grad. I’m from North Texas. I was born in Denton to be exact, where UNT & TWU are located. About 40 minutes outside of Dallas. Mostly known for sports back in the day, I still hold records at Lake Dallas High School. They got my name on the wall like a legend, all courtesy of my work ethic. I use that same work ethic with my music. I’ve always been a music head but never took it serious until about 2010. That’s when I made the transition from a party/club promoter to pursing a legit career in this music industry.
What can fans who haven’t heard your music yet, expect to hear from you?
They can expect to hear great quality music and originality. I stand behind my product 100 %. I try to give anybody who takes the time to listen to my music nothing but the best at all times. If not, I would just be wasting my time & theirs.
What’s the meaning behind your name and the whole University concept?
If you compare my work from when I first started out up until now you will see that I’ve progressed quite a bit in just a few years. A lot of people are shocked when they hear my music now. Impressed at how good it is. In a way I’ve graduated. At first people would talk down and low key hate, now I’m ghost writing for people. I’m a very fast learner, I catch on quick. Every day I learn something new that I didn’t know before. I make it cool to be smart. There is nothing wrong with opening up a book to increase your knowledge or to learn more about a business you want to be in. Most hustlers & entrepreneurs that I know are the same way. You don’t need to go school or get a degree in order to do that. - block 2 block magazine
