Cardboard Signs

Cardboard Signs - by Mike Coyle © 7/25/2007 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

I saw an old friend on the corner today
A sign was in his hands, despair in his eyes
Cup of coffee later, I can honestly say
Cardboard signs tell no lies.

20 years ago, on top of life together
Cheating death at every turn
Invincible were we, but what we couldn’t see
Were all the bridges that we burned
Couldn’t see those bridges burn

You can run, but you cannot hide
From all the things you’ve said and done
Skeletons wait patiently, but then eventually
Eventually they hunt you down
And they will try to take you down

Why does life have to be this way?
Bad design, or twisted fate?
If there’s a God up there, he doesn’t seem to care
About misery, poverty, and hate

Then out of his mouth, just like a swollen river
Flowed the wisdom of a sage:
“Better try to turn the page and see that life is like a stage,
...and everyone has a role to play
Could you play my part, for just one day?

He said...
“You can run, but you cannot hide
From what you say and what you do not do...
Could you bear to see yourself through my eyes?
Cardboard signs tell no lies

“You can run, but you just can’t hide
From what you say and what you do
Who do you see, beyond this disguise?
Cardboard signs tell no lies
Cardboard signs tell no lies

Will I Ever See You Again?

WILL I EVER SEE YOU AGAIN? Mike Coyle © 12/8/06 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

Will I ever, see you again?
Do you ever, ever think of me?
Do you ever, call out my name, in your dreams?
Could it ever, ever be the same?

Will I ever, know you again?
Or feel the gentle, touch of your hand?
Your warm breath, inside my ear as we dance,
To the music, no one else can hear

And when you think of me,
do you see me, standing there?
A different time, a different place, or do I vanish... into space?

Will I ever, see you again?
Do you remember, my embrace?
It wasn’t, very long ago, so it seems,
soul to soul, face to face.

And when I think of you, I see you standing there
A different place, a different time, but oh so real, inside my mind.

And when I think of you, I see you standing there
A different time, a different place
But will I ever again, ever see your face?

Walk With Me Tonight

Walk With Me Tonight – Mike Coyle 05/01/06
Dedicated to Rick Coyle (July 3, 1951 - January 25, 2006)
(Awahali = Cherokee for Eagle)

Take a walk with me tonight
…I have so much to say
As dusk descending robs our sight
…and colors fade to gray

Trees whisper their lullaby
…each leaf, a story tells
A feather drifting from the sky
…I understand too well

A-wa-ha-li…
A-wa-ha-li…

I held you as the night…
…holds the darkness in its grasp
You said that I cannot hold onto…
…shadows from the past

A-wa-ha-li…
A-wa-ha-li… the eagle flies tonight!

Let’s take a different path tonight
…it’s really not that far
When hiking through the universe
…10 billion miles an hour

Listen to the ancient voices
…chanting on the wind
Bending space and time until
…beginning meets the end

A-wa-ha-li…
A-wa-ha-li…

I held you as the night…
…holds the darkness in its grasp
But now I know I can’t hold onto…
…shadows from the past

I held you as the night…
…holds the darkness in its grasp
And now I know… you’re free to go…
…where shadows never cast

A-wa-ha-li…
A-wa-ha-li… the eagle flies tonight!
A-wa-ha-li…
A-wa-ha-li… the eagle flies…the eagle flies tonight!

Mr. Addiction

Mr. Addiction – © Mike Coyle 8/8/2006, All Rights Reserved

Meet you after midnight, Mister
…when you come, knocking at my door.
You best be ready to fight, cuz I’m
…not your party whore no more.
And when it’s over, Mister
…leave you bleedin’ on the floor.

Meet you in the morning, Mister
…greet you at the crack of dawn. Well I’m
givin’ you fair-warning, yeah I’m
…gonna have my weapons drawn.
And when it’s over, Mister
…leave you bleedin’ on the lawn.

Mister Addiction, yeah you
…you promised me no pain. But you
locked me in your prison, while you
…while you de-arranged my brain.
Mr. Addiction, yeah you
…you drive a man insane.

(RAP VERSE):
What’s up cous’, don’t be actin a fool... listen,
Where’s the appreciation, for all that I do... for you?
Make you feel good... deep down inside, when I
hook you up with friends, take you all for a ride.

You’re smarter, you’re hipper, it’s all because of me... when you
step inside my world, it’s the only way to be...
free from the hurt, yeah, free from the pain, yeah...
free from mister looser, when I take on your name.

Now sit back, relax, let me show you the way...
Don’t worry ‘bout tomorrow, or how you’re gonna pay... and
when you decide you want to play some more... listen,
Meet me after midnight when I knock on your door...

Mister Addiction
…you promised me no pain. But you can
cancel my prescription, ‘cuz it’s
…time to re-arrange my brain.
Mister Addiction, yes I’m
…yeah I’m takin’ back my name.

I’ll fight you in the kitchen, Mister
…yeah I’ll fight you, while I shave.
I’ll fight you every minute, Mister
…while I’ve still got a life to save.
I’ll fight you till the minister
… throws the dirt into my grave.

I’ll fight you till the sisters
…pray to God my soul to save.

Mr. Addiction, yes I’m
…yeah I’m takin back my name
