"Enigmatic"

MIKE HUDSON – ALBUM REVIEW
(BY DOMINIC FEAIN)
“ENIGMATIC”

Sometimes artists simply appear, sometimes music just arrives, and sometimes songs sound like you've always known them.

Enigmatic can't help but invite such attributions.

In this his first album Mike Hudson arrives like of breath of fresh air bringing with him a stunning collection of beautifully crafted songs.

To say he pulls at your heartstrings is too simple. Rather, Enigmatic etches at the edge of the familiar and cuts to the core of simple private things.

These are songs that fit into spaces you've saved for such things – melodies that resonate and remember, lyrics that reverberate between memory and imagination.

Mike Hudson may evoke comparison to early Peter Gabriel or even Rod Stewart but these are his songs, and this is his voice. Though he revisits some long neglected musical forms, Enigmatic transcends simplistic nostalgia. These are timely songs imbued with honesty and clarity – beautiful songs about belief and love and hope; a cohesive collection of ideas lifted up on anthems and laid down upon lullabies.

Bio

Mike Hudson is a refreshing breath of dynamic raw talent, a fusion of rich vocals, gifted songwriting and exceptional musicianship. Mike has been writing music and singing for over a decade. In the early days, he performed with various bands, before choosing to journey forward as an independent solo artist. With his distinct gravelly voice reminiscent of a young Joe Cocker, Mike’s music is a unique blend of styles encompassing elements of contemporary rock, folk and roots.

In his new EP “We Live In Colour”, Mike surpasses the confines of genre. He transitions effortlessly from the upbeat rock flavour of the title track, and the earthy grooving roots rhythm of “Bang!” to the emotionally resonating ballad “All My Love”. His expertise as a writer permeates through every song, with soulful lyrics flowing smoothly with catchy melodies.

Inspiration for Mike’s writing has been influenced by his world travels. A particularly memorable experience was recording and performing in Kwa Thema, South Africa with gospel group G.O.M. Whilst living in Shanghai, China, he often performed at Café 33 and Hong Kong’s Red Buddha Bar. Mike relocated to Byron Bay in 2008 to record his first album “Enigmatic” at Studios 301 and Rockinghorse Studios. During this time, he frequented local venues and festivals, establishing himself as a well-respected singer/songwriter. Following his move to Sydney, Mike regularly played gigs around town at venues including Will and Toby’s, Brass Monkey, El Rocco, Dean’s Café, The Annandale and The Basement.

2010 was a major year for Mike, when he signed a recording and distribution deal with Australian independent label t co music. In July, his “We Live In Colour” Single Launch packed out The Basement, which also provided the setting for the filming of his first concert DVD “Live at the Basement”.

As someone who is passionate about helping those in need, Mike organized the charity fundraiser “Concert For Pauline”. The purpose of the event was to raise money for Pauline Talty, a 36-year-old woman suffering from the life-threatening condition known as Short Bowel Syndrome. Mike performed alongside Leo Sayer and other special guests. The event was a huge success, raising an incredible $240,000.

Presently, Mike continues to play shows at pubs and clubs around Sydney, in lead up to his extensive “Mike Hudson Show” tour in May 2011 and the release of his “We Live in Colour” album towards the end of the year.
