Bio

"What’s enthralling is Janzen’s writing, woven with wit and inventiveness, and his playing’s sheer exuberance.”
-Geoff Chapman

Mike Janzen’s music-making is like joy soaring on the updraft of excellence.

From his early years in a music-filled home in rural Manitoba through formative explorations in rock and funk to his advanced training in both piano and composition (he holds a Masters of Composition from the University of Toronto), Mike has consistently carried a passionate commitment to both musical expertise and high-spiritedness.

Over the past 17 years, Mike has focused on jazz. He has studied with Hilario Duran, Jim McNeely, David Braid, Dave Restivo, Mark Eisemann, Paul Read, and Wayne Bowman.

He has worked and recorded with Phil Dwyer, Kevin Breit, Hugh Marsh, Daniel Lanois, Davide DiRenzo, Larnell Lewis, Mark Rogers, Andrew Downing, Frank Botos, Anthony Michelli, Pat Collins, Julie Michels, and Jenni Burke.

The Mike Janzen Trio is comprised of Canadian luminary George Koller on bass and the outstanding Ben Riley on drums.

Mike is a riveting performer. Josh Grossman (Artistic Director / Downtown Toronto Jazz Festival) calls him “the best kind of unpredictable”, delivering “great grooves, a funky, gospelly undercurrent, and great fun”.

Of the Mike Janzen Trio, Festival MC Larry Green (All-Canadian Jazz Festival/Port Hope) says, “If you are looking to book a wonderful jazz trio to spice up your festival, please consider Mike Janzen. His music (vocal and instrumental) has delighted many audiences…a great choice!”

Mike lives in Toronto, where he is a regular on the Toronto jazz scene. The Mike Janzen Trio has been featured at the Wreckhouse International Jazz and Blues Festival, the Port Hope All-Canadian Jazz Festival, the Oakville Jazz Festival, and numerous other venues across Ontario and Canada. Most recently his trio was seen on Canada AM playing with David Clayton Thomas.
