Biography

Internationally acclaimed and immaculately dressed, Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen have filled theatres, concert halls and festivals and received glowing critical accolades since they formed in Australia in late 2000.

In concert Mikelangelo commands the stage with his thunderous baritone voice and riveting sensuality. He is part-ringmaster, part-crooner, part-beast-possessed, and without doubt, one of the most powerful performers ever to tread the stage.

Mikelangelo is a prolific composer, and has created an exotic storybook filled with tales that will awe and enchant the listener, and melodies that draw upon his European heritage and his love of the Western Genre. His songs are at once absurd and profound, evoking lost worlds of beauty, melancholy and melodrama.

The Black Sea Gentlemen are his formidable musical ensemble, a group of four devilishly handsome, musically gifted and audaciously entertaining performers, featuring Rufino the Catalan Casanova on Violin, The Great Muldavio on Clarinet, Guido Libido on Piano Accordion and Little Ivan on Doublebass. Together they waltz, tango and polka their way though an adventurous, at times explosive, and always wonderfully theatrical show.

Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen are a sought after act on the Australian and New Zealand Festival Circuit, with seasons at major Arts Festivals such as the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, the Melbourne International Festival, the Christchurch Arts Festival and New Zealand International Festival to name just a few. In addition, they have headlined prominent Australian Music Festivals such as Woodford Folk Festival and the National Folk Festival, playing to capacity crowds in indoor and outdoor venues. They have toured with great success to Hungary and Scotland with funding from the Australia Council of the Arts. Three consecutive tours to the Edinburgh Festival have led to rave reviews, sell out seasons and a strong following in the UK.

Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen have independently released two albums through transcontinental arts company On Invisible Wings. They are currently recording their third album, which is scheduled for release in late 2008.

Lyrics

The Wild Wind

Written By: Mikel Simic

There's a demon on my shoulder with an iron grip (and an angel over yonder)
Cracking his tail like a stockman's whip,
(laying my spirit low)
He rides me like a wild horse
(he knows that I am stronger)
Through the rivers and the mud and the
rambling gorse (this can't go on much longer)
And when the day is done
I'll leave the grinding stone
And the wild wind wild blow
You know that I must go
On the wings of a crow
And when the night is dark you'll be my guiding star
The wild wind will blow
(an angel over yonder)
You know that I must go
(laying my spirit low)
On the wings of a crow
The wild wind will blow
You know that I must go
On the wings of a crow

A Formidable Marinade

Written By: Michael Simic

A Formidable Marinade

I have seen you in a Turkish bath
I didn’t know if I should cry or laugh
Nakedness has a sweet, sweet smell
It sends me down to the pits of hell
The steam that rises from the water
Tells me you are Satan’s daughter
If I am the devil's son
Into the darkness we should run

Chorus
Sodomy is not just for animals
Human flesh is not just for cannibals
I’ll feast on your body if you'll feast on mine
Blood is thicker and redder than wine
Lay ourselves out upon the table
Ravish each other ‘til we’re no longer able
When juices mix in the heat of the fray
It will make a Formidable Marinade

If I put my hand in Pandora’s box
And I was smitten by a deathly pox
If I were I leper or the warts on a toad
Would you think well of me when I go?
If I wrote my name with a razor blade
On the palm of your hand would it still fade?
If I kissed your lips would you think it wrong
Of would you come along with me

Sodomy is not just for animals
Human flesh is not just for cannibals
I’ll feast on your body if you feast on mine
Blood is thicker and redder than wine
Lay Ourselves out upon the table
Ravish each other ‘til we’re no longer able
When juices mix in the heat of the fray
It will make a Formidable Marinade

I’ll roast you on the spit like a fattened calf
When you’re done I’ll split your body in half
Climb into your reddened core
Curl up tight and close the door
In your body I’ll dream of things
Like geese, mustard, cabbages and kings
Thermoses full of chocolate sauce
Men who live on only remorse

Sodomy is not just for animals
And human flesh is not just for cannibals
I’ll feast on your body if you feast on mine
Blood is thicker and redder than wine
Lay Ourselves out upon the table
Ravish each other ‘til we’re no longer able
When juices mix in the heat of the fray
It will make a Formidable Marinade
