Mike Lemus was that Venezuelan kid growing up in the 80’s who was obsessed with American rock n’ roll. While most children were outside playing football or at the beach, he could be found listening to his parents’ old records and dreaming of the day he would be playing music around the world. His fate was sealed while he listened to songs like “Johnny B Goode” and “Great Balls of Fire”, and inevitably he was drawn into a life of creating Latin pop and rock music.
To watch Mike with a guitar is to watch someone transform. His shows are high-energy, full of charisma and edge. As a performer his intuition is finely tuned, and he’s able to measure the energy of the crowd and morph his shows to fit their expectations. Yet at the same time, when he’s holding that guitar and singing, the world melts away and it’s just him. Encapsulated in his perfect moment. His ideal reality.
His first album, Powerlove, was recorded in 2008. The album is about love, and sometimes in an almost scandalous way. And you can tell he likes throwing that bit of naughtiness into his lyrics. It’s that edge that sets him apart, that delicate blend of love with sensuality. His rhythms are catchy and vibrant, and music lovers will have no choice but to dance at his shows. No one will judge, promise.
His track Popsong went national in Venezuela not long after the album was complete. Then the same track was sent to a Latin radio station in New York City and added to an album that was promoting various Latin American musicians. His album was getting airtime, but Mike was set to move to Spain to find more opportunities.
Mike Lemus currently lives in Madrid and is working on songs for his second album. His style as an artist has matured over the years, and he now fuses his unique Latin sound with new styles and rhythms he is encountering in a different part of the world.
It’s that genuine connection with his listeners that make people come see Mike perform again and again. He’s not just “some guy” on stage singing about love. He is a true performer. With an original sound that tells anyone listening: “THAT is Mike Lemus.”
