Guitarist Mike Lorenz operates out of the Lehigh Valley and mixes it up regularly in Philly, bringing a focused and fluent vocabulary to music of original construction. Working within the melodically edgy orbit of such role models as Ben Monder and Kurt Rosenwinkel, he can float by on chordal clouds or stun you with quick flashes of linear brilliance, as on a nifty MySpace track called “3 Step.” Lorenz’s quartet comes at the material with a sense of whimsy and seasoned trust. They share this week’s Sci Fi bill with Verbatim, an experimental duo out of Richmond, Virginia (trombonist Bryan Hooten, drummer Dean Christesen). — David R. Adler - Philadelphia Weekly

Bio
Mike Lorenz is a young guitarist established in Lehigh Valley, PA leading a quartet of up-and-coming musicians performing his original jazz compositions. The group’s influences come from the avant-garde to the tradition of jazz combining the entire history of the music. Free improvisation and “outside” ideas weave themselves freely throughout melodic, modern compositions.
The Mike Lorenz Quartet is a jazz ensemble from the Philadelphia area featuring new music by a core group of creative, up and coming musicians in the region. Together, the group has performed at Smalls Jazz Club in New York City, Chris' Jazz Cafe, the Tritone, Sci-Fi Philly/Ars Nova Workshop series in Philadelphia, Puck Live in Doylestown, PA and Bethlehem's PA's Musikfest. Members of the group have also performed as part of the JVC Jazz Festival.
