Mike Massy and Vlada Tomova
From The Levant to The Balkans
Internationally acclaimed vocalists and composers Mike Massy (Lebanon) and Vlada Tomova (Bulgaria/USA) join forces with celebrated Bulgarian instrumentalists on percussion, classical and flamenco guitar, sitar and bass for their debut concert in October 2013 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Tomova and Massy are rather new musical friends. The artists met in April 2013, while Massy was presenting his US debut concert in New York City. Their meeting, although brief, inspired them to collaborate, and they got busy creating opportunities to work together. The upcoming concert in Sofia marks their debut alliance.
Tomova and Massy discovered a shared passion for exploring their unique cultural roots, while writing their own original music, and in this creating a distinct sound, unlike any other in todays international music landscape. At the same time, in Tomova and Massys interpretation, the deep emotions of old traditional songs and styles find their meaning retold in the sonic language of a new generation. The ensemble members weave each their unique sonic thread into the fabric of this meeting of magicians.
In their first joint concert at Sofias Studio 5 the artists shared with the audience their journey and excitement of discovering the multitude of cultural bridges, ancient and new, between the Levant, the Balkans and farther lands in music, movement, spirituality, dress, language and more.
Future plans include a host of feature concerts in 2014, in Sofia and other European and Middle Eastern cities and festivals, as well as the premiere of The Spice Route project, November 2013, at Lincoln Center in New York.
