Where does a song come from? From which womb is it natured into existence? There is something wildly mysterious about the fruition of a piece of music. It’s a process that has been passed down and re-envisioned many times throughout the existence of mankind. Since song has no fleeting desire for permanent self-identity, it belongs to us all. There are no rules in its free-form jurisdiction.
Mike McGeeney comes along as just one more participant in this chain of endless creation. Influenced by the deep somberness and integrity rampant in the traditions of folk and blues music, McGeeney is a diligent witness in the marriage of words and melody. It’s a responsibility he does not take lightly. Being exposed to the festiveness of rock ‘n’ roll from an early age, he also knows never to take anything too seriously, including himself.
Inspired by a larger-than-oneself mentality, McGeeney’s songs often reflect the solace accessible from what cannot be easily defined or understood. Many of his material wavers in the void between what is and what shall never be, meshing personal experience with broader perspective for an end result that is both heartfelt and relatable. But, let’s not be mistaken, rhetoric is no substitution for substance; all that’s left to do is open up your ears and listen.
