"Having No boundaries in my career. Mike McKenzie gives Black Vibe the scoop on stage name & more."

Tell the people who you are and the meaning behind your name?
My name is Mike Mckenzie. The whole point of my name is to have no boundaries in my career. I used to go by the nick name "Mooga" that was given to me by some friends in High school but I sat down one day and analyzed what exactly I was trying to do with my music career. I change it to Mike Mckenzie to be more marketable. Also there were people online with the same name fighting wit me for it so I figured instead of fighting for a name I should just be myself. I can take any lane and be whatever rapper I want to be with my original name. I didnt want the name I chose to dictate my career path.

How long have you been rapping at what age?
Don't really know when I started rapping but I started taking it seriously when I was about 18-19 years old.

Everyone has a success story what's yours?
Music has always been in my life but it wasn't my first love. Though I used to rap during high school it came second to my hoop dreams. I hit a point in my college career where I got injured and had to stop playing basketball on a collegiate level. When I hit a low point of depression one of my friends from high school who go by the rap name Moomdaddy came to me trying to get me to take rap seriously because I was naturally good at it. I always had a talent for writing but this was a way for me to vent about my life & gave me a new drive towards something. With new goals & a new drive my main mission is to be remembered past my time on this earth but when everything is settled I owe any success I get to Moomdaddy.

Tell us about your mixtape?
My mixtape is titled "Standy By". It has production from a couple of Boston's best like Gilly C of RLS, Evilldewer, JRob, & Moconn. Its bascially a collection of songs some old, some new that has never been released. Also have a couple of collaborations like Real P from the Boston rap group Famous Nobodies. You may know Dutch Rebelle who was on MTV's Rapfix at one point.

What's next from you?
Next Thing On the list is to bang out more videos off my "Stand By" mixtape while I'm pushing the first single "Imma Star". The video is available at www.youtube.com/ReelLyfeSociety

Please inform us on your next project?
Next I am going to release one more mixtape before I drop my first album "Boarding Pass" (which is produced by Russian producers, Lego Beatz & Dj Ape Cruso). It Should be dropped sometime this year with all 80's/early 90's beats. This cd will include all the members of Reel Lyfe Society(Mike Mckenzie, Moomdaddy, G.P.A., Gen Gutz, & Gilly C). The mixtape name isn't decided as of yet.

Everyone has up's and down's in the industry could you tell us your life struggles?
I have a problem with feeling stationary. I like to see direct results from my actions and that doesn't happen most of the time in this industry. Most of my struggles has been mental. It is hard sometimes to keep yourself motivated when you are not seeing anything being compensated from your actions. Being an unsigned artist my money is obviously limited and I give everything to this music. Once the pressure of life start setting in you have to make a choice to either continue with music or just stop. Luckily I'm strong willed enough to keep it pushing.

Do you belong to any foundation or charity?
Not at this time, but wish to have my own someday.

What where you doing before you became This success rapper?
I was a college basketball player/School boy. I also shot & edited videos on my off time.

"Thisis50 interviews hip hop artist Mike Mckenzie"

What is your name?
My name is Mike Mckenzie

Where are you from?
Im from Boston,Ma

How did you get the name?
I used to go by the nick name "Mooga" that was given to me by some friends in High school but I sat down one day and analyzed what exactly I was trying to do with my music career. I change it to Mike Mckenzie to be more marketable. Also there were people online with the same name fighting wit me for it so I figured instead of fighting for a name I should just be myself. I can take any lane and be whatever rapper I want to be with my original name. I didnt want the name I chose to dictate my career path.

How would you describe your entertainment skills for the public audience if they have never seen you before?
Passion. Every time I touch the staged I leave it getting a lot of love. People can see the passion in my eyes when I am rapping because everything I rap is real and based on how i feel about personal topics. I do not put on a persona when I do music, this is my life for the public.

Thinking back to early
childhood, what was your first experience with music for the first time like? What song do you remember most as a child?
The first experience I had with music was my father singing the chorus to "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious 5. He basically drilled that song into my head. Besides that I come from a African American background, literally. My mother is from Monrovia, Liberia in Africa so I heard a lot of African music growing up as well as New York Rap. Hot 97 was all I new as a kid living in Staten Island Projects on Park Hill ave. The song I remember most as child is Wu Tang "Its Yours". They shot that video in the projects I grew up in. I even tried to hop in the video but they stopped the shoot & told me to leave because I was too young. My sisters made it i there though.

As a child growing up, music surrounds us; what type of music did you hear the most back then? How does is differ from what you listen to now?
When I was little I heard mostly rap music. The difference between me then and now is the ignorance level. I am more opened to different cultures, & genres of music. For example I do listen to a little bit of Rock music now. Linkin Park, Avenged Sevenfold, Green Day, 30 secs to Mars, Bullet For My Valentine etc. I dont think I even knew what Rock music was as a kid.

What made you first realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?
Music has always been in my life but it wasn't my first love. Though I used to rap during high school it came second to my hoop dreams. I hit a point in my college career where I got injured and had to stop playing basketball on a collegiate level. Bio

Mike Mckenzie is a Boston based rapper from #ReelLyfe Society?. Reel Lyfe Society is a Boston based group that has their hands in music, videos, and fashion. Mike Mckenzie alongside fellow RLS artist Moomdaddy, originally created the group. Mckenzie is originally from Staten Island, NY and was born in Brooklyn. Coming from a broken home, in which he expresses in his music, his mother moved to Boston when he was almost 9 years old. Through his music he express his mindset and views on life through the eyes of a maturing man from the inner city. Seeing a lot of violence, dealing with emotionally and morally draining problems, he uses music to vent to the world in hopes of connecting with his audience due to the "Reelness" of his content. This type of humility is shown through his music and reality, as he tries to connect and make himself accessible to all of his fans as much as possible. ?
