"Ballard Session at Doe Bay"

Second Son with The Passenger String Quartet

http://ballardsessions.com/ - Eratosthenes Fackenthall

"Song of the Day: Mikey and Matty - Second Son"

Although it was recorded just like the rest of the album, - in Mike’s bedroom - “Second Son” doesn’t carry any sonic or thematic trademarks of isolation; it’s a layered gem that unveils its tricks slowly as its mid-tempo burn goes on. As Matt’s rich vocals soar over a calm and insistent beat, the instruments blend to form a potent mixture of melodic and textural tones. Warm and inviting, “Second Son” is a demonstration of the potency of a pair of brothers making music together: a cohesive, smooth song that highlights the pair’s musical cohesion. - KEXP

"Curtains For You Members Take Solo Flight"

Few singers this side of Jonathan Auer and Ken Stringfellow harmonize with the telepathic effortlessness of the Gervais brothers, and their voices intertwine magnificently throughout Harbor Island. One of the unexpected joys of the record is hearing Michael (usually a background vocalist on Curtains’ releases) take the lead on several tracks with a limber, rootsy tenor that contrasts and blends with his brother’s pure-pop croon sublimely. - The Sunbreak

Harbor Island - self-released album
Second Son - KEXP Song of the Day

Mikey and Matty Gervais have been making music together their entire lives. They have a musical language that is all their own, and listening to them sing is like being let in on a cherished secret, one that is by turns melancholy and playful.

Matt and Mike have spent the last seven years as the singer and lead guitarist of the energetic, irrepressible Seattle retro-pop band, Curtains For You. They have toured with The Head and the Heart, opened for The Posies and participated in showcases with the Seattle Rock Orchestra.

For the last year, they have been secretly brewing up a full-length album of new material that represents the best of their decades-long collaboration.

Though it is beautifully mastered, Harbor Island is a true bedroom record. It was recorded entirely in Mikeys tiny apartment. With the exception of backup vocals by Melissa and Stephanie Reese, some masterful trumpet-playing by fellow Curtains For You bandmate Nick Holman and a guest spot on violin by Charity Rose Thielen, they made every sound and played every instrument on the record themselves. In addition to the more traditional instrumentsguitar, piano, harmonica, clarinetthey improvised percussion with doors and light switches, bike pumps and broken glass. They crafted each song in careful layers. The result is an album that is crisp and uncluttered, but rich with unique, organic sounds.
