Bio
Oxnard, CA native, Miki Vale, became adept with a pen and pad at an early age. In elementary school she started writing poetry, an interest that would later serve her well as a songwriter. In the late 80s, her older brother Zoltan was a DJ who made Hip Hop mix tapes. Zoltan's vast record collection and mix tapes introduced Miki to such "golden era" Hip Hop artists as MC Lyte, Special Ed, Gangstarr, Nice & Smooth, and Public Enemy. As a songwriter, Miki draws from these true skool inspirations as well as imagery from everyday life to create a unique soundscape: one part Hip Hop, one part old soul, two parts evolved artist and revolutionary MC. Her melodic flow illustrates a mental picture with each line and breathes new life into Hip Hop as we know it.
No stranger to the music industry, Miki Vales career has run the gamut from magazine writer and artist publicist to concert promoter. Ive always wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes. Being a successful artist is more than meets the eye. As a writer, I had the opportunity to interview major and independent artists and learned the ins and outs of the industry from an artist perspective.
Miki Vale has collaborated with some of Hip Hops elite including OHNO, Dudley Perkins aka Declaime, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Kankick, Oddisee, S1 of Strange Fruit Project and more. In 2002 Miki met fellow artist Blest, a founder of Sleeping Giant Music (SGM). This alliance led Miki to join the SGM family. In 2004, SGM released a compilation album featuring a roster of underground Hip Hop talent. The album, entitled "The Awakening", features Miki Vale's smooth, buttery vocal stylings on several stand-out tracks. 2006 saw the release of Mikis collaboration with Oxnards most elusive crate-digger, Kankick, entitled Yes Yes (Suite 3), a 7 single on Ramp Recordings. In 2007, Miki was selected by the editors of Billboard Magazine from over 3000 artists as one of six finalists to perform at Disc Makers Independent Music World Series Showcase and was also nominated for a San Diego Music Award for Best Hip Hop Artist and Best Hip Hop Album.
Miki Vale has earned her stripes and due praises by opening for such notable artists as Slick Rick, Mos Def, Bahamadia, Loot Pack, Declaime, Too $hort, Living Legends, Souls of Mischief, The Roots, DJ Quik, Young MC, and more. With the recent debut of the snippet/single "The New Dope," Miki's name, music, and message are spreading faster than the Cali wildfires. Now, Miki is back in the lab, working hard on her solo debut album, set to be UnValed soon.
