Milonga

Milonga was originally formed in 2001 by lead vocalist, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nicolas Vigil. Since its beginning, Milonga has steadily attracted dancers, music lovers and partygoers with its festive sound. Focusing primarily on original material in the traditions of Latin dance music, Milonga also mixes in elements of American Jazz, Funk, Soul, Pop, Hip Hop, and Rock & Roll, creating a unique hybrid that reflects their cultural experience as Latinos in America. Musicians and dancers agree that no other band in town can pack a dance floor on the first song and hold the crowd til the last song, like Milonga does. Though the band has seen its share of players come & go, Milonga is currently writing, recording & performing with a steady lineup of cats who have each solidified their place as core members of the group. In addition to Vigil (lead vocals, accordion, tres, nylon & electric guitars, shekere, timbales & percussion) the band's lineup includes veteran conguero George De La Rosa (congas, percussion) who joined the band late in 2002, introduced by former conga player Miguel Cortez. Greg Brandt "Speedy Bailando" (keys) was also introduced by former bassist Greg White, and has remained a steady contributor to Milonga's sound. Eddie Ramirez (bass), a long-time friend of George and Speedy, began filling in for Greg White and eventually became Milonga's resident bassist. Eddie's virtuosity and capabilities as a producer are a truly noteable contribution as well. Miguel Maldonado (trumpet, supporting vocals) was recommended by Milonga's original trumpet player, Steve Mauer, who had developed a mean case of tonitis. Miguel joined forces with Brian Lassiter (bari sax) and the two began making solid arrangements to bring the melody back to Milonga's sound. Jesse Leek (tenor sax) came into the band originally as a fill-in for Lassiter, who was on a summer internship out of state. Jesse was, at the time, Brian's top student and only 16 years old. Nevertheless she was up to the task and to this day, continues to dazzle audiences, whether onstage or in the studio. Brian Mueller (trombone) was introduced by Maldonado and immediately earned a spot in Milonga. Mueller, or "The Mule" as his bandmates call him, shines both as a section player and soloist and has a tremendous ear for originality. Mueller also introduced Chris Newbury (drums, timbales) to the group in early 2009. Newbury came to his first gig as a last-minute fill-in. After only 1/2 hour to listen to Milonga's CD, Chris sat down and played the entire set, as if he was a veteran of the band. Chris was immediately a perfect fit for Milonga and continues to tear up the Latin rythms with De La Rosa. Milonga has been seen onstage and on my space and you tube, jamming with the likes of Poncho Sanchez, Ozomatli and many other great Latin Artists. Their CD is available at live shows.
